Richard H. Leonard(1921 - 2014)

Leonard, Richard H. Former editor of The Milwaukee Journal for 18 years, and senior vice-president of The Journal Company, died on May 18, 2014, at the age of 93. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Barbara Klausner, and daughters Laurie (Steve Jones) Leonard and Lisa (Peter) Heck. Leonard was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. May 23, 1921 and was raised in Ridgewood, N.J. He attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison until WWll. He served four years in the army in both the European and Pacific theaters. At the end of the war he returned to UW and became editor of the student paper, The Daily Cardinal, where he met his wife. He graduated in 1947 and began his 38-year career at The Milwaukee Journal, where he was a reporter, state editor and managing editor before assuming the position of editor-in-chief. His overseas reporting included trips to Africa, South America, the Soviet Union and China. After retiring from The Journal, Leonard was an assistant professor of communications at Marquette University. He was active in numerous journalism organizations: chairman of the International Press Institute, member of the Pulitzer Prize Board, president of the National Society of Professional Journalists, president of the Milwaukee Press Club and education chairman of the Milwaukee United Nations Association. Among his awards are: The University of Wisconsin Chancellor's Award for Distinguished Service, East-West Center Distinguished Service Award for better understanding between the Pacific Nations and the United States, and the Milwaukee Press Club Hall of Fame. The family wishes to extend its sincere appreciation to the caregivers in the Memory Unit of Eastcastle Place and to the special care given by Seasons Hospice. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 28, 2:00 PM at Eastcastle Place, 2505 E. Bradford Ave., Milwaukee, family will greet friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Richard's name may be made to the Greater Milwaukee Foundation to benefit the Hunger Task Force and Humane Society, 101 W. Pleasant Street, Milwaukee, WI 53212.
