William C. "Bill" Christel

Christel, William C. "Bill" Passed away Monday, January 7, 2013, age 91 years. Beloved Husband of the late Viola (nee Ermenc). Devoted Father of William (Cherrie) Christel. Loving Grandpa of William (Jennifer), Paul (Jennifer), Andrew (Amanda) and Matthew (Kinsy) Christel. Great Grandpa of Paul, Carly, Daniel, Jillian and Calvin. Brother of Elaine VerBraken and Mary (Ed) Mulloy. Preceded in death by his parents Alvin and Minnie Christel. Also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Visitation Thursday, January 10, at Mary Queen of Heaven (2322 S. 106th Street) 10AM until Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM. Private Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. Bill was born and raised in Valders, Wisconsin. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a nose gunner and radio operator on a B24 heavy bomber that was shot down over Yugoslavia on their 16th Mission. He was captured and spent a year in a German prison camp, which included a 600 mile "Forced March" across Germany. He was awarded 16 medals, including the Purple Heart for his service. After the war, he ran Bill Christel's 66 Tap in West Allis. He left that business and later retired from his career at RTE Power Systems in Waukesha. Special thanks to Dr. Duthie and the entire loving, caring and skilled staff on 9C of the Zablocki VA Medical Center, Bill's "Home" and "Extended Family" for the past five years. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Mary Queen of Heaven or Zablocki VA Medical Center-Fisher House would be appreciated.
