James Gissing Obituary

Gissing, James Edward James Edward Gissing, 89, passed away Nov. 9, 2017 at the VA Hospital in Lexington, KY. Born and raised in Milwaukee, WI, he brought his family to Lexington in 1970 to start an engineering function for Johnson Controls in Georgetown, KY. He later took an assignment with Johnson in Middletown, NY and once again moved back to Lexington in 1977 to work at Johnson's Georgetown facility. A proud Korean War veteran, he was active in the American Legion where he served as past Commander of Post 120 in West Allis, WI. He was a long-time member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Lexington. Besides his family and friends, his loves included a cottage on a small lake in central Wisconsin, photography, woodworking, visiting our national parks, and listening to books on tape. No stranger to adversity, he was challenged by declining eyesight since the late 1960's, but refused to let his eyesight limit his opportunities. He is survived by Esther, his loving wife of 66 years, his son, Michael (Kathryn), his grandchildren, Katie (Zach) Jacobs and Steven, his brother, Edward (Jan), several nieces and nephews, and many friends, especially Pat and Larry Jones. He is preceded in death by his sister, Carrolyn (Warren) Schmidt. Visitation will begin at 11:30 AM on Tues., Nov. 14, 2017, St. Paul Catholic Church, 501 W. Short St., Lexington, KY, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 PM. Burial will be at the Camp Nelson National Cemetery in Nicholasville, KY, on Tuesday at 2:30 PM. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to St. Paul Catholic Church or to the veteran's organization of your choice. Milward-Broadway is serving the family. www.milwardfuneral.com

Jim was a wonderful man who will be missed dearly. My deepest condolences for your great loss Esther. You both are the perfect couple. We so appreciated your hospitality back in September 2010 and were so happy we got to see you both then. Great memories from our visit and when I was a little girl up through the years. Take care and sending love your way.
