Andrew Crapol Obituary

Crapol, Andrew Edward Grandson of Frank P. and Agnes Zeidler, 30, passed away peacefully March 13, 2009, from cancer, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert and Trish Simmons, of Alexandria, VA. Born and raised in Williamsburg, VA, Andy graduated in 1996 from Lafayette High School, where he played soccer for four years and was President of the Student Council Association. He attended the College of William and Mary, playing soccer for the Tribe men's team for four years and earning an Economics degree in 2000. He attended the University of Virginia Law School, earning his law degree in 2005. Andy worked as an associate for Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, first in Washington, D.C. and more recently in New York City, where he resided. Andy's family includes beloved wife, Allison Simmons Crapol; devoted parents Edward Crapol and Jeanne Zeidler; sister Heidi Crapol and brother-in-law Milam Walters; sister Jennifer Sedbrook and brother-in-law John Sedbrook; brother Paul Crapol; sister-in-law Kimberly Simmons; as well as aunts, uncles, nephews, a niece, and cousins, and his best friend, Shane Emmett. Andy is also the grandson of Paul and Emmi Crapol (both deceased) of Buffalo, NY, and Frank P. (deceased) and Agnes Zeidler of Milwaukee, WI. A memorial service will be held 2 PM Saturday, March 28, in the Wren Courtyard, on the campus of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA, with a Celebration of Life immediately following. In recognition of the many friendships Andy made as a member of the soccer community and his love of "the beautiful game," a scholarship has been established. Donations can be made to the College of William and Mary Foundation, with the notation "Andrew Crapol Scholarship Fund," P.O. Box 1693, Williamsburg, VA 23187.

April 14, 2009

Dear Jeanne and Ed,
Learning of your grief in losing your son -- "our little
Andy" -- whom Bill knew from the day he was born and I met when he was four years old and fell in love with at first sight. leaves all of us with a heavy heart. It seems almost impossible; in our sorrow we know no words can console you in your loss. The little boy we knew was such a fun kid to be around! Reading about him as an adult makes me know he grew up to be everything anyone could have hoped for in a son; intelligent with a marvelous disposition, a happy heart. Dear friends, we are so sorry. So very very sorry. (We cherish the beautiful Program of his Memorial. Our friend Harris Simon sent it to us.) Andrew E. Crapol, you will always be loved. Sincerely, Josemarie and Bill

To the family and friends of Andy Crapol, I knew Andy in high school and the first years of undergrad college. I met Andy through a fellow friend and teamate of his, Matt Hansen, and upon hearing your loss I am at a loss for words. Andy was a diamond in the ruff, a gentleman who carried a life force that burned so brightly that even his smile after an Andy story made everybody around him just simply want to be better. Better people, better all around. He lived the life of a 70 year old man squeezed into 30 years, and that is the only solace I seem to find in this hard time for everybody that knew Andy. May we all strive to live a life as full as Andy´s.

April 1, 2009

I had the pleasure of meeting Andrew back in 2005 while I was still in high school. I used to go to D.C. to visit my brother Sergio, and Andrew was one of Sergio's friends who immediately embraced me with open arms, telling me that if I ever needed anything, not to be afraid to ask. Every time I had visited since then, I got to hang out with Andy at sporting events, clubs, restaurants. He always had the greatest stories to tell; he lived his life to the fullest. I feel honored that the last time I saw him was only a few months ago, and I gave him a hug, thanking him for the subsequent platter of wings, brisket, ribs, and pork from Rockland's that he so generously bought for us. I'll never forget you Andy, and I love you.

Dear Dr. Crapol,
My heart goes out to you and your family at the loss of your beloved son Andy. Having read all of his accomplishments, you must feel immense pride and sorrow.
I am a former student of yours at W & M and have wanted to contact you for some time. I am sorry that this is the event that has caused me to contact you. I am Helen Sims Mitchell, class of 1970 and you were my favorite professor. You were my inspiration and I actually made all As in your classes. I am now in my 39th year of teaching, mostly high school, and am the chairman of my department at Bethel High School. And yes, I teach American History.
My very best to you and you are in my heart and prayers.

My sincerest condolences to Andrew's and his wife's families. I was shocked to have received the news today. I attended all three years of law school with Andrew and played soccer with him on the law school's city-league team. He was one of the nicest players and persons around, never with a negative word. And as nice as he was, he was an even harder worker on the soccer field -- he was the one guy who would voluntarily run wind sprints after kick-around, just to improve. Not that he needed to improve; he was already perhaps the best player around in those days. A good man. I will miss him, and I am so sorry for the loss. Brooks

I had the distinct pleasure of getting to know Andy during his first year of law school in Long Island (despite the fact that we grew up a mere matter of miles from one another). We shared the high honor of being the only two sons of Williamsburg, VA to grace the hallowed halls of Hofstra (perhaps ever). In any event, aside from the coincidence of having grown up in the same town, Andy struck me, and all of our classmates, as being one of the kindest and most charismatic people we'd ever come across. From the soccer field to the depths of the law library, he was a constant source of good humor. Andy was a truly remarkable man. My thoughts are with you, and all who had the pleasure of crossing his path. With love, SAR

The Henry family sends its thoughts and prayers to you during this most trying time. Doug, Andy's W&M teammate reminded us that not only was Andy a skilled player, but he possessed the sense of humor that made the game! Being from Milwaukee we knew of the Zeidler name before we met Andy, but he clearly inherited the gift of caring. Andy's life was a blessing for all who knew him.

I feel so blessed to have been able to call Andy my brother. I can't say that I remember life without his smile, short/much longer/much shorter hair and that laugh...that epic, evil laugh from deep in his soul. These, and the companionship he's offered me from such a young age...are the things I will always miss. Allison, Crapol family and of course, my real brother Shane...you all have my deepest thoughts and condolences. I look forward to celebrating his wonderful life with you in the days to come.
