Haglund, Donn Keith Passed away peacefully on August 9, 2017, at the age of 90. Devoted husband of Alma B. (Nee Hebel) Haglund. Loving father of Erik (Lisa) Haglund. Cherished grandfather of Will, Jack, Devin, Brandon, Kerry, and Ale. Further survived by other loving relatives and dear friends. Dr. Donn Haglund has been known for his expertise in maritime transport to support Artic economic development. He is Professor Emeritus of Geography at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, where he established an Arctic Winter field course which he taught for more than 40 years. The course "Arctic Winter," inspired countless students with his passion of the far North and his dedication to preserving the Arctic Circle. Haglund began teaching at the Wharton School at the age of 21. He earned his Ph.D. in Economic Geography from the University of Pennsylvania; topic based in Greenland. Donn Haglund has been a visiting Professor at the Universities of Alaska, Carleton, Calgary, Saskatchewan, and Stockholm. Dr. Haglund also lectured Oxford, Cambridge, among other esteemed institutions. He was also inducted into the prestigious Sigma Xi for his service to Science and Society. Dr. Haglund served as President of the Wisconsin Geographic Society, Governor of the American Polar Society, and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Arctic Institute of North America, Vice President of Monaco's Comite Arctique International under the Honorary Chairmanship of Prince Rainier. Donn Haglund has been devoted to the Alaskan Iditarod Trail Dog Race which commemorates the historic 1925 dash by a dogsled from Anchorage to Nome that carried a serum to treat Diphtheria during the epidemic. Dr. Haglund has been praised by leaders of the indigenous communities of the Polar region for his stance of solidarity and dedication to continued research and economic development. Donn Haglund has also been a devoted Eagle Scout for over 60 years. Visitation will take place on Friday, August 18, from 5:00 to 8:00PM at Feerick Funeral Home, 2025 East Capitol Drive in Shorewood. A second visitation will take place on Saturday, August 19 from 4:00 to 5:00PM at United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay, 819 East Silver Spring Drive. A funeral service celebrating Donn's life will take place following the visitation at United Methodist Church, at 5:00PM. Interment will be private for the family at Green Ridge Cemetery, along with Military Honors honoring Donn's service during WWII. Memorials in Donn's name may be made to The Worker's Camp Nome, Alaska, c/o United Methodist Church of Whitefish Bay, WI.
