John J. "Jack" McCoy

McCoy, John J. "Jack" John James McCoy died peacefully at his Egg Harbor home and joined his beloved wife Ruthie on June 18, 2012. Jack is survived by his children, Suzy (David Boerke) of Milwaukee, WI, John, Jr. (FaithAnn) of Sturgeon Bay, WI; and his grandchildren Christopher Boerke and Nicholas Boerke. Jack was born on December 21, 1919. He grew up in Whitefish Bay, WI. After graduating from Whitefish Bay High School and Kenyon College he attended the Harvard Business School. During his stay at Harvard he was called to serve his country as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in WWII serving on the Pacific front and fighting at Guadalcanal. Jack loved his country and was a true patriot, known in his later years for donating numerous "tall" flagpoles and "large" flags for public buildings and harbors in the Egg Harbor area. Jack married Ruth (Lange) in 1944 and they celebrated 56 wonderful years of life together. Jack began and ended his career working for Charter Manufacturing Co., starting out in 1946 as an executive at the Mellowes Company, one of its Milwaukee subsidiaries. He worked for most of those years reporting to Charles Mellowes his greatly respected boss and good friend and took great pride in watching the company grow under Charles' son John. He enjoyed curling and helped lead the transition of the historic Milwaukee Curling Club to Mequon Wisconsin while he was president. "Captain Jack", as he was often called, was an avid sailor and served as commodore of the Ephraim Ephraim Yacht Club. He also helped found the Egg Harbor Yacht Club, becoming its first commodore. He loved his Flying Scott sailboat named after his mother "Laura". He won most of his races and mentored many fledgling sailors in his boat. He also enjoyed golf, tennis and especially traveling the world with Ruthie. Jack treasured his retirement years at his home in Egg Harbor, WI "where the eagles fly and the sailboat pass by". Over the years he and Ruthie enjoyed their many wonderful Door County friends and were also visited often by many beloved friends and family from Milwaukee. The family wishes to thank the team of caregivers from Unity Health and express our most heartfelt thanks to Holly Runquist who served as Jack's respected nurse, counselor and friend though out his illness. There will be a private family ceremony to say goodbye to our "Captain Jack." Memorials may be given to the organization or charity of your choice in Jack's Memory.
