Gregory Scott Porter Notice
Porter, Gregory Scott Died peacefully, surrounded by loving family members, on May 20, 2014 near his home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, just shy of his 68th birthday on July 5th. A much admired and multiple-award-winning teacher, he earned his PhD in Mass Communications from the University of Iowa before serving as a professor at Baylor and Marquette Universities, the latter of which he dedicated 26 years to before retiring in 2007. Beginning as a little boy, Greg enjoyed nothing more than spending time with loved ones at his family's lake cottages in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. His endless wit, commitment to social justice, and deep love of family and close friends will endure in his physical absence. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Edith "Midge" Porter, and former spouse and lifetime friend, Catherine Small (Pat). He is survived by his long-time partner, Joe Barbian; son, Steve Porter (Ashley Duncan); siblings, Laura Weaver (Bob), Phil Porter (Fonda), Lisa Johnson (Keith); aunts, Kay Akers and Leona Shiverdecker; uncle Harold Sweet (Charlene); and so many wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Private memorial services will be held at the family's convenience in Greg's birthplace of Dayton, Ohio and lifelong summer home of Helmer, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hunger Task Force, University of Iowa, Wright State University, Northmont High School (Englewood, OH), Cream City Foundation, ACLU Foundation and Human Rights Campaign.
