Gloria J. "Glorie" Johnson Notice
Johnson, Gloria J. "Glorie" Passed away in her sleep surrounded by family at her Mequon home on June 7, 2014, after a long and valiant struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She was 84. Gracious, warm and elegant, she maintained her bright smile and sense of humor even as time gradually dimmed less immutable traits. Treasured wife of Leland C. Johnson for 63 years. She is further survived by her children, Renee (Joseph) Tyson, Kevin (Deirdre) Johnson and Lance (Shawn) Johnson, her brother, Jerome (Carol) Liss and her beloved grandchildren: Taylor (John) Haywood and J. Benjamin (Katherine) Tyson, Mark Johnson, and Amanda, Olivia, Robin and Mia Johnson. Glorie was a psychology major and a member of Delta Zeta Sorority at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she met her husband, Leland and love of her life. While raising their three children, she was an active and committed volunteer for numerous organizations, including the Milwaukee Symphony Women's League, Milwaukee Boys and Girls Club Women's Association, Junior Achievement Women's Association, Milwaukee Children's Hospital Welfare Auxiliary League, the Muses of the Milwaukee Public Museum and University School of Milwaukee Parents' Association. She was a board member of many of the above organizations, as well as the chair of many of their major fund-raising events such as the Symphony's Designer Style Show and Children's Hospital's Anniversary Ball and Fashion Show. She founded and was president of the Suburban Federation of Republican Women, where she was selected along with Bart Starr and astronaut James Lovell to give the state convention gubernatorial nominating speech. Glorie was a member of the Women's Club of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Country Club, the Town Club and John's Island Club of Vero Beach, Florida. Glorie was a gracious and charming hostess who liked to entertain and meet new people and was an avid golfer, bridge player and Badger fan. Her first priority, however, was always her family. She was especially proud of all of her grandchildren. She was always young at heart, young in looks and young in spirit. She loved to dance. Visitation will be from 5:00PM until 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 12 at the Feerick Funeral Home. A private funeral service will be held on June 13.
