George Edward Wells Notice
Wells, George Edward Age 83, of Wauwatosa, WI, passed away quietly in his sleep on October 11, 2011. George was born on July 25, 1928 to Caroline Bond Wells and Howard Albion Wells. He graduated from William and Mary College in Williamsburg, VA. He served in the Korean War and upon his return married his loving wife of 58 years, Sally Hammond Wells. In addition to raising three children, he spent 24 years at the First Wisconsin National Bank of MIlwaukee as an Assistant Vice President in the National Commercial Division. During his tenure at the bank, he earned a certificate at Stanford University in the Graduate School of Credit and Financial Management. George had many civic and fund raising affiliations including the Chicago Symphony Association of Milwaukee where he served 16 years. He logged many professional hours at Riveredge Nature Center and as an executive committee member of the Friends of the Milwaukee Public Museum. He also served many years as an Associate member of the Milwaukee Foundation, raising dollars for various non-profits city wide. His love for music fueled his interest in Music for Youth, Inc. serving for twenty five years. George Wells could be considered a true renaissance man, for he pursued his interest in history through international travel, especially to England, many times exploring his heritage, and was a founding member of the Wauwatosa Historical Society. He had an avid interest in gardening, art, and opera. George is survived by his devoted and loving wife Sally Hammond Wells and three children; Merrick Wells of Wauwatosa, WI, Sarah Wells Carroll of Albany, NY, and Caroline Wells Stone of St. Paul, MN. He has eight grandsons ranging in age from 20 years to 17 months old. His healthy appetite for adventure in life will be missed by all. His heart was full of love for his summer cottage in Mercer, WI where he spent summers as a boy, and raised his children and grandchildren "on the dock". George and Sally have many lifetime friends who have shared in some of his great ideas and adventures. He will be greatly missed. May George rest in Heavenly Peace. Visitation 4-6 PM at Becker Ritter Funeral Home, 14075 W. North Ave., Brookfield, WI 53005 on Sunday, Oct. 16. Memorial Service will be held on Monday, October 17, at 11 AM, with a light lunch to follow at the First Congregational Church of Wauwatosa, WI, 1511 Church Street, Wauwatosa, WI 53213. Memorials can be sent to the Wauwatosa Historical Society, 7406 Hillcrest Drive, Wauwatosa, WI 53213, or the First Congregational Church.
