Otho J. "OJ" Kent

Notice Condolences

Kent, Otho J. "OJ" Otho J. Kent "OJ" of Slinger, age 87, passed away on August 17, 2012, after a courageous struggle to recover from heart surgery. OJ was born in Alabama and grew up on a cotton farm, before serving in the Navy during World War II. In 1948, his graduation from the Chicago Television School led to a job with pioneering Milwaukee station WTMJ (Channel 4), where he worked for 35 years, until his retirement in 1983. His kids remember how he liked to tinker, and when they were young it seemed there was no challenge more fun than fixing a non-working TV. OJ spent every summer at the family cabin near Land O' Lakes. He loved lake fishing and his endless patience served that "activity" well. Five hours without catching a fish would not be reason enough to quit before he planned to. His love for playing cards started with Sheepshead, in later years the game changed to Texas Hold'em. He apparently enjoyed both winning and losing and practiced both. OJ was also an avid gardener; in Slinger and at the cabin he produced terrific tomatoes and in Brown Deer he befuddled neighbors by grafting pear branches onto apple trees. OJ is survived by his wife, Rosemary; they would have celebrated their 55th anniversary on August 20th. He is also survived by his four children, Lynda Corfeld (John) of West Allis, Michael Kent (Nancy) of Schiller Park, IL, Jeffrey Kent (Cheryl) of San Rafael, CA, and Christine Brooks (Phil) of Portage, five grandchildren, Kelly Corfeld, Tracy Corfeld Stasinopoulos, Jenni and Jason Sommers, and Eric Shimpach, and great - granddaughter, Haylie Gorski. OJ was predeceased by his first wife Marian in 1955. The memorial will be private. Thank you to the amazing staff at St. Luke's. For anyone wishing to make a donation in memory of OJ, the family suggests St. Luke's, Milwaukee or of their choice. Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend is assisting the family.
