Eva Jacob Obituary

Jacob, Eva (Nee Neubauer ) Born February 28, 1934, died May 15, 2016. Cherished wife of Fred for more than 60 years. Much-loved sister of Frank (Hannah) Neubauer and the late Raymond (Anne Marie) Neubauer. Dear mother of Stefanie (Scott Tisdel) and Walter. Beloved Oma of Andy and Emmy Tisdel. Survived by many other dear relatives and dear friends. Mom bloomed wherever she was planted: in New York, where she arrived at age 4, after escaping Nazi Germany with her family, and where she later attended the Fieldston School; in Cambridge, Mass., where she graduated from Radcliffe with a Bachelor's in English, summa cum laude , and earned a Master's degree from the same institution after serving as a teaching assistant to poet Archibald MacLeish; in Lincoln, Mass., where (while raising her children) she served as curator for the DeCordova Museum and wrote on issues in the arts for Boston publications; in Washington, D.C., where she worked for 18 years as Policy and Planning Officer for the National Endowment for the Arts (1978-1996) and in 1992 created the Endowment's Chamber Music Rural Residencies program; and in Milwaukee, where she spent almost 5 happy years at St. John's on the Lake, making wonderful friends and fully involving herself in the vibrant life of the community. She loved painting and drawing all her life, and retired early from the Endowment in order to paint full-time. Special thanks to Dr. Shah and all the Oncology nurses at Columbia-St. Mary's, who gave Mom those precious extra months after her cancer diagnosis in August, and to all the loving nurses at St. John's, especially Rose, Janine, and Jackie, who took such tender care of her in her final days. There will be a memorial service for her in June. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be sent to the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, 1584 N. Prospect Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53202.
