Our father Vance O. Dunbar, was catapulted on his final flight into the heavens just after the New Year on January 2, 2017. At his home, in San Diego, California, his son Peter was in close attendance. A loving, compassionate, devoted father and grandfather who cared about others as well as his own family.
Born and raised in Milwaukee, WI he was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin at Madison on a Navy ROTC scholarship, with a BS in Psychology. At a 1958 Halloween party held by NAS Memphis he had a blind date with Nancy, dressed as a vampiress to his werewolf. Bitten by love at first sight, they were married the following June. With the support of his new bride he went on to Naval Post graduate school in Monterey, CA where he received an MS in Electrical Engineering. With the love of his life, they began a journey around the world to follow his 20 year career as a naval fighter pilot. He loved flying all aircraft with the F-4 Phantom at the top of his list. While with the Naval Air Systems Command, he was head of electronic development for naval jets.
During the families adventures, they enjoyed entertaining, bridge, bowling, tennis, skiing, camping and the great outdoors. Widowed in 2008, survived by his son Peter and his daughters, Jeanne, Kathleen, and Michelle, his granddaughters Jackie, Jeanne and grandson Derek, as well as his sister Carol Moran.
And so, as in the Navy when deployed we Send Off our beloved Vance to join Nancy and grandson Nick once again & many of our other loved ones.
He was celebrated with Military Honors at the Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, CA, January 18, 2017 followed by a Send Off celebration at his home with family and friends.
