Joe Spencer Hertje of Kingfisher, Oklahoma age 83 passed away at Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City, Ok on Wednesday May 7, 2014. Cause of death: complications due to surgery.
He was born December 26, 1930 in Canton, Oklahoma. He attended and graduated from high school at Eagle City Oklahoma 1950. After high school he started working on the winter wheat harvest crew from Texas to North Dakota. By 1952 Joe had his own combines and crew. Over the next few years Joe worked winters as a heavy equipment operator in the Oklahoma City area and ran his seasonal harvest crew. Joe later worked as a mechanic at the John Deere dealership in Julesburg, CO. He met his loving wife Wilma Smith in Big Springs, NE. He and Wilma moved onto the Smith family farm in 1958. Joe farmed and ranched and continued custom harvesting part time for the next 50 yrs. In 2010 Joe retired and moved to Kingfisher Ok.
Joe was a member of: United Methodist Church in Big Springs, NE, The Optimist Club, and served as President of Ogallala Moose lodge. He enjoyed playing and attending high school basketball games, livestock auctions, parades, tractor and machinery shows, threshing bees, and watching the Oklahoma Thunder.
Joe was preceded in death by his wife Wilma of 29 years. He is survived by his four children Ronald, Lynette, Susan and Spencer, three grandchildren Joe, Vanessa and Scott.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014, at 10:00 AM at the United Methodist Church in Big Springs.
