Pioneer Juneau resident Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Quist passed away June 12, surrounded by family, at the Juneau Pioneer's Home following a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease,. She was 90 years old.
Betty was born Oct. 6, 1922 in Portland, Oregon. She was the adopted daughter of early Juneau residents Julia P. and George B. Rice and arrived in Juneau in 1924. She grew up in a house on Evergreen Avenue, which was then on the outskirts of Juneau. She shared a love of the outdoors with her brother Hallie, who preceded her in death. Betty attended Juneau schools and graduated from Juneau High School in 1942. She lived almost her whole life in Juneau.
She met and married Robert Quist in 1961 and the couple enjoyed many years of fishing and boating, playing Bridge and living the Alaska lifestyle. She was a member of the Elks and Moose clubs and loved sewing, making clothes for her husband and granddaughters. She loved children and took care of many young toddlers in her home.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Quist, and by three sons: Kenneth, Richard and Daniel DeRoux; and four grand-children, Vanessa and Margaux DeRoux (Kenneth and Sybil), Katie Zentner Hamlyn and Eric Zentner (Daniel and JoAnn), and one great-grandson, Austin Hamlyn.
A memorial service for Betty was held at the Juneau Pioneer Home on June 20, followed by a picnic at Auke Recreation Area. Interment was at Alaskan Memorial Park in Juneau.
Cards can be sent to 9567 Meadow Lane, Juneau, 99801.

Betty was a great but humble human being. She and Bob treated me and wife Linda like old friends when we moved to Juneau in 1967. Rest in peace, Betty.

Bob, Dan, Rich and Daniel,
My thoughts are with you all at this time. I met Betty while working at the Bridge program and truly enjoyed getting to know her and Bob during the time she attended the program, and later during visits to the Pioneer Home. Though I only knew her in her later years, it was obvious she loved her family and had a wonderful life in Juneau. I will light a candle tonight here in Odessa Ukraine in her memory-peace to you all,

Ken, Richard & Daniel -
I just received the obituary notice today from my sister in Juneau. Please accept my condolence on your mother leaving you guys.
Over the many years since you guys lived on Dixon St., you & your very gracious mother have been part of my memories of growing up in Juneau.
As we enter the autumn of our lives most of us have a tendency to be more introspective and consider things more seriously.
Some of us believe/realize (in the context of eternity) that life seriously begins at death. I think that's because this life is but a blink of an eye. My mother died at the age of 99 ..... a blink in the context of eternity.
I hope you guys and your step-father are doing well.
