Sylvia Helen Hartman
October 12, 1944 to July 20, 2013
Former Juneau resident Sylvia Helen Hartman lost her nineteen-year battle with non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma and leukemia at her Kala Point home surrounded by her family. Sylvia was born and raised in El Paso, TX where she graduated from University of Texas
, El Paso in 1967 with a degree in Special Education. She was honorably discharged as an officer in the US Navy in Pensacola FL where she met her husband. She accompanied him, a pilot in the Coast Guard, on his thirty year Coast Guard career moving fifteen times including three to Alaska, and once to Puerto Rico. She loved Alaska and were it not for her cancer would have never left.
As a special education teacher she taught in Oregon and Alaska. She was retired from the State of Alaska Department of Commerce where she was the Assistant to the Director of Administration and a shop steward for the Alaska State Employees Union.
Sylvia and her husband have been residents of the Kala Point Homeowners Association in Port Townsend WA since 2000 where she was active on the tree committee. She enjoyed her family, beading, and gardening. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Jeffrey, and her three adult children, Sasha Semple and Grandson Oliver from Aspen, CO; daughter Nicole and husband Chris Clark from Sequim, WA; and son Bradford and wife Christy Hartman of Juneau, AK. Surviving also is a sister Alicia in Harrisburg, PA; a brother Jose in Boston, MA; and sister Mary Lou in Bradenton, Florida; and a number of nephews and nieces.
A celebration of her life will be held at Kala Point and in Juneau, Alaska. In lieu of flowers the family asks for memorial gifts be given to the Hospice Society of Jefferson County.
