Pioneer Juneau resident Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Quist passed away June 12, surrounded by family, at the Juneau Pioneer's Home following a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease,. She was 90 years old.
Betty was born Oct. 6, 1922 in Portland, Oregon. She was the adopted daughter of early Juneau residents Julia P. and George B. Rice and arrived in Juneau in 1924. She grew up in a house on Evergreen Avenue, which was then on the outskirts of Juneau. She shared a love of the outdoors with her brother Hallie, who preceded her in death. Betty attended Juneau schools and graduated from Juneau High School in 1942. She lived almost her whole life in Juneau.
She met and married Robert Quist in 1961 and the couple enjoyed many years of fishing and boating, playing Bridge and living the Alaska lifestyle. She was a member of the Elks and Moose clubs and loved sewing, making clothes for her husband and granddaughters. She loved children and took care of many young toddlers in her home.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Quist, and by three sons: Kenneth, Richard and Daniel DeRoux; and four grand-children, Vanessa and Margaux DeRoux (Kenneth and Sybil), Katie Zentner Hamlyn and Eric Zentner (Daniel and JoAnn), and one great-grandson, Austin Hamlyn.
A memorial service for Betty was held at the Juneau Pioneer Home on June 20, followed by a picnic at Auke Recreation Area. Interment was at Alaskan Memorial Park in Juneau.
Cards can be sent to 9567 Meadow Lane, Juneau, 99801.
