Juneau resident Racheal MacLeod, 65, passed away Good Friday afternoon, April 18, 2014, at her home following a brief illness. Racheal was born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. In her early years, her family lived in Victoria, British Columbia, where she attended school, graduating from Mt. View High School in 1966. She was particularly proud of attending St. Ann's Academy for the first nine years of her scholastic career.
The Guest Book is expired.
She met her husband, Dan MacLeod, on a trip to Reno in 1974. They married June 10, 1975, in Carson City, Nevada. In 1976, they couple moved to Duncan, British Columbia, where Dan began his accounting career. For the next ten years, they moved around between Oregon and Reno, Nevada, before arriving in Juneau in 1988, where Dan joined an accounting practice. They have made their home here ever since. Racheal was a devoted mother and wife as well as an exceptional friend. She delighted in her grandchildren and cherished her friends, having nothing but time and attention for those she loved.
In the 1990's, Racheal, in association with the Juneau Yacht Club of which she and Dan were members, began organizing community contributions for Holiday Gift Boxes to provide staples and foodstuffs for families in need. She built this annual effort into a significant community service that one year provided 350 food boxes to be distributed. This service is now run by the young Rotarians of Rotaract. Her considerable gifts for organizing served the community in numerous ways, the gift boxes being just one example.
Affectionately known as the "Bird Whisperer", Racheal took immense delight in feeding not only the birds of the air but also any four-footed canine she came to know. Always ready for an unexpected encounter with her furry friends, she was a welcome sight to each and highly favored for her thoughtful offering of tasty biscuits kept in her pocket for just such opportunities.
Racheal is survived by her much loved husband of 39 years, Dan, her beloved children and grandchildren: daughter Lisa Dallas (Dan) of Juneau; stepdaughters Brandi MacLeod and Joya Machabee (Tony), both of Reno, Nevada; granddaughter, Samantha Thompson of Juneau; and step-grandchildren Lucas and Eden Machabee of Reno, NV; and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Spencer Hocevar, and other family members.
A celebration of life is being planned for Saturday evening, June 14, at Glacier Gardens from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to either Hospice & Home Care of Juneau, 419 6th Street, Juneau, AK 99801; or St. Paul's Catholic Church, 9055 Atlin Drive, Juneau, AK 99801.
