Delores Elaine Doogan, passed into the Lord's loving embrace on Thursday October 11, 2012 at the age of 79. Delores was born August 31, 1933 in Shevlin, MN to Gustaf and Selma Wickstrom. With her older brother Oscar, she lived and worked on the family's dairy farm just outside of Shevlin. Delores had fond memories of her childhood, including sharing the cake-batter spoon with her childhood dog Fritz at the age of four. Years later, she attended college receiving her teaching certifcate from Bemidji State Teachers College in 1956.
Having an adventurous spirit, Delores accepted a teaching position in Juneau, Alaska. She met and eventually married the love of her life, John M. Doogan on October 17, 1959. She taught at Harborview Elementary, until she and John started a family of their own. Delores was a devoted wife and mother; sharing the blessing of thirteen children in a loving catholic home. Filled with laughter, sometimes tears, and lots of prayer, her home and life brimmed with charity for others and the noise of children. Her off-key singing, and accommodating cheer will be missed.
Delores often said her memories were flled with happiness of spontaneous outings with her family usually to one of the local beaches. All the children she taught were "her" children. She could always be found, regardless of her frame of mind, with a smile on her face and a ready hug. Her sudden passing leaves a hole in the volunteer agencies she served: St. Vincent's, the Prayer Chain, other outreach programs in the larger Juneau community, and in particular, her family.
Delores is survived by her husband John M. Doogan, children and spouses; Cecelia, Mike, Merina (Ronald Metz), Neil (Alma), John (Laura), Charlotte (Michael Kair), Kevin (Son-Mi), Kitty (Edward Hoch), Joseph, Christine (Gerrit Allen), Joy (Richard Sheridan), Andy (Josh Hamilton); 23 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Preceding Delores in death are her parents Gustaf and Selma Wickstrom, brother Oscar Wickstrom and daughter Linda Doogan.
A funeral mass will be held Thursday October 18, 2012 at St. Paul's Catholic Church at 2:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Life reception following at the parish hall (St. Peters Hall), 9055 Atlin Drive, Juneau, AK 99801. All friends are welcome.
