Eugene (Gene) F. Chittenden, long-time Juneau resident, passed away Saturday, September 20, in Colorado Springs, CO. Gene died as a result of pulmonary fibrosis. Gene returned to Colorado a year ago to be near his family and private services will be held in Colorado.

Gene is survived by his wife, Barbara (Craig) Chittenden, daughters Laura Dangel (Tim Adamson) of Seattle and Helen Dangel (of Anchorage), and grandsons Keet and Janwu Lorrigan. Gene is also survived by his sister Glenda Heizer, brother Bruce (Kathy) Chittenden, nieces and nephews Maribeth Bennett, Eric (Debbie) Bennett, Suzanne (Dave) Dunscomb, Julie Lewis, James (Joyce) Asmus, Aaron Heizer, Sara Heizer, Jonathan Chittenden, and numerous grand nieces and nephews.

He is preceded by parents, Glen and Blanche, two sisters Marion Bennett and Joanne Asmus, and brothers-in-law Douglas Bennett and Richard Asmus, and his mother-in-law Frances Craig.

Gene was born in Sioux City, Iowa on July 21, 1949 to Glen and Blanche (Howard) Chittenden. The family moved to Colorado in 1965. He graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1967 and went to Southern Colorado State College in 1971 majoring in mathematics. He was drafted to join the US Navy and was stationed in Japan and Washington D.C.

He worked as a computer programmer/ analyst for a company called Informatics. Gene moved to Alaska in 1979 working for a contractor as the supervising programmer for the design and implementation of the State's Supplemental Benefits System. He fell in love and married Barbara Craig of Sitka in January 1983. At that time, Gene went to work for the State of Alaska, Division of Retirement and Benefits.

He loved IBMs, science fiction, rock 'n' roll, and fast cars. Gene brought his silver Mustang up when he moved to Alaska. He loved living in Alaska, and Barb's daughters were his only children. He loved his grandchildren, and all his nieces and nephews. Gene liked to walk his little black Scottie, Pepper, and feed bones to all the neighborhood dogs in Lemon Creek. Gene was very friendly and warm, and was loved and treasured by all. His Juneau friends were like family, especially close family friends Kay and Roy Gouyton, and their children. He'll be missed by many but not forgotten.
