April 15, 1927 - May 26, 2015

Frances Lee Darnell (née Walrath) died peacefully in her sleep on May 26, 2015 in Anchorage, Alaska. She was born April 15, 1927 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Duane and Lucile Walrath where she grew up on her father's farm near Gering, Nebraska. She attended Colorado Women's Collage in Denver and the University of Denver and was graduated with a degree in zoology. She met her husband, Frank, during her student days. Immediately after their marriage in 1951 they drove to Alaska, which became their home for the next thirty years. Ashland, Oregon would become their home base in the early 1980's until she and Frank returned to Alaska in June 2014.

Known as Franny to some, Fran lived around the world, happily accompanying Frank to Great Britain, Australia, Norway and Greenland, as well as traveling throughout Europe. In addition to her love of books, dogs and cats she enjoyed the pleasure of walking on a beach searching for pebbles. She was a pianist, great at math, an editor, a librarian, and above all, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was gentle and gracious, and carried a strength and stubbornness that would surface at the most unexpected and serendipitous times. She was much loved by all who knew her.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband Frank; daughter Sara Darnell-McGee (Gary); sons Joe (Joan) and Alfred (Sunita); grand and great-grand children: Chandra, her son Olav Tchegeownta; Oran (Eloh), their sons Manu and Ari; Anna; her brother Larry (Marcia), sister-in-law Rita, sister-in-law Mary and nieces and nephews. Her parents and brother, James, predeceased her.

The family is grateful to those who looked after her professionally: her doctors, nurses and caregivers during her long illness.

Condolences may be sent to Frank Darnell at 2020 Muldoon Rd, Apt 345, Anchorage, AK 99504. Following a celebration of life, to be announced later,
Fran's ashes will be spread on the tundra in the Alaska Range.
