On February 8th 2013 our beloved " Papa/ Mr. Greg" passed away. He will always be remembered for his passion for the outdoors, determination, intelligence, compassion, and desire for justice.
He hiked many mountains and swam in seas from Alaska to Europe. As a doctor he touched many lives. Those of us who worked in the same community 'never heard a bad report', only comments on his kindness and dedication.
In 1987, he met and later married his wife of 24yrs, Ruth Matera. Both were in training at Highland General hospital in Oakland, CA. They moved to Alaska in 1995. Here we found unsurpassable beauty and lifelong friends.
Dr. Matera is survived by his wife Ruth, his stepson: Micah Perez and is two children: Micah 2 and Dani, Greg's mother and father: Joe and Betty Matera.
To all those who knew us well, I send a special farewell to Greg: You were my friend and love. My hope is to see you in a better place. A mere exhalation away. As you sleep and wait without pain or suffering. I can now say goodbye. Te adorar, Gregorio Tomas Matera. Until we meet again, Ruth.
