Gwen was born on May 23, 1950 at St. Ann's Hospital in Juneau, Alaska to Glenn and Gladys (Schaal) Byington. Following graduation from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1968, she attended Western State College of Colorado and earned a degree in Sociology from the University of Alaska in 1972.
Gwen had a long work history with the State of Alaska, starting as a legislative aide to former Representative Sally Smith and transferring to the Executive Branch as Paralegal in the Department of Law, Director of the Alaska Board of Parole and Assistant Ombudsman. She retired from the Ombudsman's Office in June 2013. Gwen was thought highly of by her co-workers and loved as a dear friend by many. Her wonderful laugh will be missed, as will her kindness towards others.
Gwen took pleasure in long walks on beaches and forest trails with her beloved dog Oraios and enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends. The delight of her heart was frequent trips to her mother's cabin in Tenakee Springs and memories fishing with her Dad. She also loved road trips, gardening, berry picking and reading.
She is survived by her daughter, Kelly Jo Prewitt of Anchorage; brother, Bill Byington of Tenakee Springs; nephew, Miles Byington of Juneau; and her faithful companion Oraios. She was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Gladys Byington; and her older brother, Phillip Byington.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In memory of Gwen's affection for animals, in lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to the Gastineau Humane Society, 7705 Glacier Hwy, Juneau, AK 99801 or to Retouch, Po Box 671104, Marietta, GA 30066, a non-profit her daughter partners with to provide education for children in Africa.
Her daughter, Kelly Jo may be reached at 2840 Chenoweth Street, Anchorage, AK 99516.
