Long-time Juneau resident, Joan Elizabeth Trimble, died September 25, 2016, at Providence Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska.

Joan was born July 7, 1943 in Portland, Maine and moved to Juneau in January 1977, with her two small children. She met her husband George in the winter of 1977 while square dancing and they married in June 1982. Joan and George have been married for 34 years.

She began a career with the State of Alaska in 1977 and retired as Secretary for the Commissioner of the Department of Labor in 1998. Juneau was her home for 39 years.

Joan's friends learned early on that her two deepest loves were of the Lord and her family. Joan was a long-time member of Juneau Church of the Nazarene, teaching first- and second-graders about Christ's love for them for 23 years and where she had the honor of being lovingly known as "The Gum Lady." For the past 15 years, Joan cleaned the church each week and volunteered two mornings a week at the Bartlett Regional Hospital gift shop. She enjoyed playing cards and board games, brightly painted toenails, and watching Jeopardy. Mostly, Joan loved helping others as well as generously and selflessly sharing her heart and her time with countless people. She displayed an attitude that there really are no strangers…only friends she hadn't met yet.

She is survived by her husband, George; her mother, Rosemary Townsend of Maine; her brother and sister-in-law, Kerry and Robin Townsend of Maine; her brother and sister-in-law, John and Linda Townsend of Massachusetts; her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Jared Yancey of Juneau; step-daughter, Lisa (Marvin) Klein of France; step-son, Derrick (Georgina) Trimble of England; grandchildren, Lexie (Walter) Malika of Idaho; Nicole Yancey of Juneau; Alex (Julie) McCord of Arizona; Ian Klein of California; Elyse (Nick) Zylstra of Washington; Amelié Klein of Idaho; Brittany (Max) Bender of Colorado; Caleb (Megon) Trimble of Virginia; Devon (Katie) Trimble of Colorado; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and many friends who loved her. She is preceded in death by her father, John B. Townsend Jr.; her son, Jason Hutchinson; and her sister, Veronica Prescott.

Friends are invited to a celebration of her life on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Valley Church located at 9741 Mendenhall Loop Road in Juneau, Alaska. You are welcome to come wearing brightly colored clothes and brightly painted toenails, and ready to share your favorite memories of Joan. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to either Juneau Church of the Nazarene - Missions at 3220 Mendenhall Loop Road, Juneau, AK 99801, or to the at their website: www.lung.org.

Family and friends miss Joan very much, but know that she is rejoicing in Heaven, where they will one day reunite with her.
