Joan Marie Gorman Sutherland (1933 - 2011)

The Guest Book is expired.

Joan Marie Gorman Sutherland, a resident of Boise, Idaho for 31 years, died on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at home with her husband and daughters. She was born Sept. 27, 1933, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Edward N. Gorman and Esther Beaulieu Gorman.

Joan was born and raised in Ellendale, Iowa, just north of Sioux City, Iowa, and attended Liberty School from grades 1 through 12. Her parents, Ed and Esther Gorman, owned the local gas station/country store which was attached to their home.

Joan married Wayne Sutherland at Ellendale Catholic Church on June 11, 1955, and they have been life partners for almost 60 years. Together they raised three daughters, Sheri (Ray) Vidic of Juneau, Renee Sutherland of Portland, Ore., and Valerie (Mark) Anderson of Lake Oswego, Ore.

Joan was very proud of having helped put her husband through college while at the same time raising their two oldest daughters. She enjoyed a life focused on caring for her family, as well as traveling to more than 30 countries with her husband and family, visiting her daughters and their families in Portland and Juneau, and cherishing her time with her two grandchildren, Travis and Taylor Vidic.

After moving to Boise in 1980, Joan volunteered with the local Welcome Wagon group; she volunteered for many years at Elk's Rehab and had enjoyed a subsequent association with her "Go Go Girls" friends. Joan was an avid Bridge player, she loved solving crossword puzzles, and reading and watching Boise State football and Duke University basketball with Wayne.

Joan is survived by her husband, Wayne; daughters, Sheri, Renee, and Valerie; sons-in-law, Ray and Mark; and grandchildren, Travis and Taylor. Joan is also survived by many dear friends and family in Boise, Iowa, California, and Juneau. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers Loren and Pete Casper.
