John Daniel ""Dan"" Squires, 68, died at his home on February 17. Dan was born April 2, 1946 to Floyd G. Squires and Carell Egelkraut, and was raised on Samish Island, Washington, where he worked on his parents' dairy farm. He graduated from Burlington-Edison High School in 1964 and went to Central Washington University, where he graduated with a degree in education. After college, Dan returned home and worked on the family farm. In time Dan decided that he needed to work with his hands, and he became a cement finisher, working on buildings, bridges, and roads throughout the Skagit Valley and, later, Seattle areas. In 1988, he graduated from the University of Washington with a master's degree in civil engineering. It was this passion for doing things the ""right"" way that led him to Alaska, where he met his life partner and true love, Kathleen Gamble-he and Kathleen spent the last 21 years together in Juneau. Among Dan's many interests were ham radio, hunting, fishing, his cat Spooky, and giving a hard time to his friends, neighbors, and colleagues. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Club, an active member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, the Juneau Amateur Radio Club, the American Society of Testing and Materials (for which he served on the Committee on Aggregates), and he was also the vice president and charter member of the Alaska chapter of the American Concrete Institute. At the request of the Department of Transportation, Dan was recently honored with a commendation from the State of Alaska legislature for his work and research on improving the roads in Alaska.

Dan is survived by his partner, Kathleen Gamble; his children, Bradley (and Lori) Squires, Lisa Squires (and Jonathan Simmons), and Steven Squires; Kathleen's children, Leslie Keim and Duncan Gamble; a beloved granddaughter and grandson, Maia Simmons and Max Renner; his sister, Muriel Neely; his brother, Floyd Squires, Jr.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services were held February 23, 2015 at 5 pm at Resurrection Lutheran church in Juneau. Services will be held at a later date at Edison Lutheran Church in Bow, WA.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be sent to the boiler fund of Resurrection Lutheran Church 740 W. 10th Street, Juneau, AK 99801-1822
