Macord Mason-Peter Obituary

Macord Mason-Peter died Feb. 24, 2011, surrounded by friends and family.

He was born Oct. 15, 1990, in the Anchorage NICU and grew up in Juneau. When he was three years old he was diagnosed with severe autism. As he grew older it became clear that he would always be severely developmentally disabled.

His family wrote "throughout his life he touched the lives of others. Macord brought out the best in those who knew him because of the challenges created by his disability."

He was non-verbal but very adaptive in finding ways to make himself understood. The places he loved included the Augustus Brown Swimming Pool and Friends of the Library. He was also a volunteer at KTOO.

In March of 2007 he went to Lakeview Specialty Hospital in Waterford, Wis., as there was no care facility for him locally. When he turned 18 he became a resident of Fieldstone House in Meridian, Idaho.

After almost four years living away from Juneau, he returned to live with his parents Feb. 16. He returned to Juneau on a medical airlift and was able to live at home and enjoy the love of his family in his final days.

One of his greatest loves was classical Disney videos. His favorites were "Pinocchio," "Lady and the Tramp," "101 Dalmatians," "Dumbo," "Beauty and the Beast," and others. He was especially fond of Winnie the Pooh.

He is survived by his mother, Joanne Mason, and father, Eric Peter, of Juneau; sister Shawna (Kevin) Puustinen, nephew and niece Ike and Kallie Puustinen, all of Juneau; grandmother Jean Vavalis of Juneau, grandfather Jack Mason of Port Protection, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Pallbearers are uncles Jim Mason, John Mason, Scott Balou, and Chris Pata; cousins Jake Mason, Jace Mason, Harley Siefert and T.J. Mason.

Contributions may be made to the Macord Mason-Peter Donation Fund at Wells Fargo, account No. 9177255669, committed entirely to assisting the families of children with disabilities.

A memorial service to celebrate Macord's life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Auke Bay Bible Church, 11970 Glacier Highway.
