Mark Edward Haffner
March 7, 1970 – June 22, 2015
Mark Edward Haffner died in the early morning hours on June 22, 2015. Born March 7, 1970, he was the youngest of five children born to Ben and Betsy Haffner of Tee Harbor. Mark grew up in Juneau and most recently lived in Hoonah.
Mark was a commercial fisherman and his name and face are recognized by many in the fishing community. He began his career as a fisherman on the waters of Southeast Alaska when he was very small, taking trips on the fishing boats Sven and Tyee. He worked as a crew member on many commercial fishing vessels including Competition, Gaff Rk, Helen T, Myrtle, and the Phoenix. Mark and his brothers, Matthew and Michael, also fished the waters around Tee Harbor in a small boat named the Firecracker for its red, white, and blue paint job, and there are plenty of fish tales to tell of their adventures.
He eventually struck out on his own, buying a small double ender troller, the Tanya, fishing it for many years. He later upgraded to a larger boat, the Blue Harvest, and ultimately purchased a large ex-military vessel, Cirus, which he operated as a tender until his death.
Mark possessed a special sense of humor and could usually be counted on to make somebody laugh, even if, or maybe because, it was inappropriate. He loved to hunt and spent time hunting with his dad and brothers, as well as his good friend Evan. When he was a teenager, he was drawn for a Berners Bay moose permit, a privilege not many enjoy.
He is survived by his father, Ben Haffner, his twin brother Matthew Haffner (Bonny Millard), brother Michael Haffner, and sisters Lisa Haffner-Ritter (Ray) and Heather Olson (Kevin), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He is also survived by his girlfriend Ronda Davis, who cared for him deeply. He will be missed by his good friends George Lunda, Rick Daugherty and Evan Gonzales, as well as many others too numerous to mention. He was preceded in death by his mother Betsy Haffner and his beloved dog, Kobi.

Mark will be missed by his family and friends. At his request there will be no services. A Celebration of Life may be organized at a later date. His ashes will be scattered in Southeast Alaska over the waters he loved. The family can be contacted through Lisa Haffner-Ritter at PO Box 210993, Auke Bay, AK 99821. Ronda Davis can be contacted at 9951 Stephen Richards Memorial Drive #14, Juneau, AK 99801.
