Mary Sargent died at the Pioneer Home in Juneau on May 18, 2013.

She was the daughter of Elizabeth Horan Just and Rudolph Knudsen Just. She was born in 1924 in Beijing, China, where her mother was visiting a friend and her father was working for a major international company. The family moved to Shanghai to avoid political turmoil, and then in 1929 returned to her mother's home in California.

Mary's father died soon after their return to the United States, and for the rest of her childhood Mary and her mother shared a home with Mary's maiden aunt in the Bay Area. Mary then attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she was a member of Kappa Delta and the Prytanean Women's Honor Society, as well as being a senior editor of the university yearbook, "The Blue and Gold." She graduated in 1946 with a Bachelor's Decree in Social Welfare.

Mary returned to her mother's hometown, and worked there for a time for the City of Vallejo and the American Red Cross. She then took a job with the Social Security Administration in Reno, Nevada, for about ten years.

While there, she married Paul Sargent. They moved to Juneau in 1965, where she continued to work for the Social Security Administration for a number of years. They rented an apartment for about a year, but Paul did not like paying rent, so they bought a home on Dixon Street, where they lived until they moved to the Parkshore Condominiums in the 1990s.

Paul and Mary had one daughter, Samantha (formerly Pamela). Paul died in 2001.
Mary is survived by her daughter Samantha Dane (2 Stelmack Road, Derby, Connecticut 06418), and three stepsons, Paul Sargent (990 Mendenhall Peninsula Road, Juneau 99801), Michael Sargent (Gardnerville, Nevada), and Thomas Sargent (Spokane, Washington).

In lieu of flowers, Mary asked that people consider making a contribution to her beloved Beth Kerttula for her continuing efforts to provide Juneau with admirable legislative leadership.(Contributions can be sent to "Re-Elect Kerttula," 10601 Horizon Drive, Juneau, Alaska 99801.)

A gathering in Mary's honor will be scheduled at a later date. If you would like to be notified about it, please let Larri Spengler know (907-586-9768 or by e-mail).
