Sandra Harriet Perry, 59, formerly of Juneau, entered into rest Monday, February 18, 2013, at her home on Lake Whatcom in Bellingham, WA. She was born January 27, 1954, in Cambridge, MA, the daughter of Francis Swift Perry and Eleanor Louise Perry.
Sandra graduated from Framingham South High School in Framingham, MA, with the class of 1972. She studied at Northeastern University, receiving certification as a phlebotomist. Moving to Juneau in 1977, Sandra soon found work as a Senate page with the Alaska State Legislature. On October 4, 1980, Sandra Perry and Bob Provost were married at the Shrine of St. Therese.
In 1981, their son, Robert John Provost II, was born, followed by their daughter, Kathryn Thornton Provost, in 1983. Sandra's career in the Legislature advanced from page to secretary to administrative assistant, increasing in responsibilities from constituent relations to detailed work on the state operating budget. Her public service career in Alaska culminated in 1995 with her selection as special assistant to the Commissioner of Public Safety. Sandra brought to her public service career a strong work ethic, sharp political acumen, and vivacious wit.
She was a gifted artist, especially skilled in stained glass work, sewing, woodworking, and quilting. In her spare time she advanced her talents in cooking, gardening, and knitting.
Sandra held a deep fondness for the outdoors, and truly enjoyed her time spent camping, skiing, golfing, and taking her dog for walks on a beach, among her most treasured places.
In 2003 Sandra retired to Bellingham, WA, where she worked part time as a phlebotomist and continued her creative endeavors. Her grandchild, Eleanor Nita Thomas, born May 7, 2009, was the brightest light in each of her remaining days.
She is survived by her two children, Robert Provost of Juneau, and Kathryn (Chad) Provost Thomas of Seattle; her mother, Eleanor Perry of Boston; a brother, Bruce Perry of Boston; two sisters, Gail (William) Perry-King of South Berwick, Maine, and Carol (Richard) Long of Fall River, MA; former husband, Robert Provost of Brevard, NC; grandchild, Eleanor; and dear friends Janet Killarney of Boston and Jenny Dawson of Juneau. She was preceded in death by her father, Francis Swift Perry.
A remembrance ceremony followed by a celebration of life will be held Saturday, March 16 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. in Juneau, at the sanctuary and fellowship hall of Northern Light Church. Friends, family, and loved ones are invited to attend and share their thoughts and memories. Sandra's family requests that in lieu of sending flowers, a perennial flower be planted in a cherished setting of your choosing in honor of her memory.
She was many things to many people - Sandra, Sandy, Mom, Red, Mrs. P, Mama G, Nana Perry- when remembering her, please recall her words of wisdom: "Follow Your Heart" and "This Too Shall Pass."
