VIRGINIA "GINNY, GINNA," SUE COPLAND, DVM
May 23, 1954- July 25, 2015

Virginia Sue Copland, 61, passed away July 25, 2015 at Bartlett Regional Hospital, in Juneau, Alaska.

Sue was born in Duncan, Oklahoma to George Victor Copland Jr. and Martha Rosalee Shock Copland. She received her DVM from Oklahoma State University Veterinary School of Medicine in 1980. Following graduation she took a job in a veterinary clinic in Fairbanks, AK where she met Truman Middleton, an FAA employee in electronics at a square dance. They were married on the banks of the Yukon River in Eagle, AK, in 1982. After she completed a three year residency at University of California, Davis in veterinary anesthesiology and critical patient care, they spent a year in Australia.

Returning to Alaska in 1987 they established the Juneau Pet Clinic (now the Juneau Veterinary Hospital). Flying their Lake Amphibian plane allowed them to provide veterinary services in the bush as well as enjoy the aviation community. After a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 1989, she reluctantly retired from the practice of veterinary medicine in 1991. Her husband Truman died in 1992.

She was an accomplished pianist, choir singer, English horn player, bush pilot, author, animal lover and world traveler, traveling to Australia, New Zealand, China and South Africa. Beyond any shadow of a doubt Juneau was her home. She loved Alaska and delighted in looking out at Auke Bay every day. In 1994 she met Louis Keller. They had 21 wonderful years together and were devoted to each other.

She is survived by her partner Louis Keller, his daughters, Debra Woodbury (husband Ron) and their son Caden of Bothell WA, Christy Gendron (husband Greg), and their daughter Chianna of Juneau AK, her mother, Martha Copland of Duncan OK, sister Elizabeth Ann Leckey (husband Donald) of Ann Arbor, MI, brother John R Copland of Albuquerque, NM, brother James Copland (wife Diedre Hofinger) of Albuquerque and their daughters, Hannelore and Gwendolyn, her cousin Mary Cyllene Pellegrin (husband Joe) of Oklahoma City, OK and many close friends in Juneau.

A celebration of her life will take place at 2 pm on Saturday September 5 2015 at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Juneau.
