William Lawrence Baumgartner (Bill) passed away on December 21, 2012 at home in Coos Bay, Oregon. Born August 30, 1932 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Marguerite and Rupert Baumgartner. Bill is survived by his wife, Sarah; brothers Richard and Paul Baumgartner; sister Claire Beckner; sons Joel, John (Dee Dee), and James (Patti) Baumgartner; daughters Phyllis (Michael) Scott, and Lucy Looper; and nine grandchildren. Predeceased were his parents, brother John, and daughter Ann Rosen.
After High School, Bill served in the Army, was stationed in Germany from 1950-1953, and attended college at University of Missouri Rolla. Bill came to Alaska in 1964 with his young family where he worked as a Civil Engineer for the State DOT in Juneau and City Manager of Soldotna. In 1987, after retirement, Bill split his time between his summer cabin at Whales Pass, home in Juneau, and snowbird roost at Coos Bay, Oregon. In 2009, he and Sarah moved permanently to Coos Bay.
Bill loved to fish, hunt, play cards and travel. He was a member of the Douglas and Mendenhall Flying Lions Clubs, and volunteered his time for other public service, most recently as EMT and volunteer fireman in Whales Pass and Coos Bay.
