Nelson J. Major

Major, Nelson J. Kalamazoo, Michigan Nelson J. Major, age 84 of Kalamazoo, died at home surrounded by his loved ones on June 7, 2021. He was born on January 1, 1937, in Gary, Indiana, the son of Nelson and Katherine (Ross) Major. He worked as a chemist at Upjohn Company for 34 years, until his retirement. On December 15, 1960, he married his dearly loved Luella Rose Meeth, who preceded him in death in 2015. Nelson loved sports and was a Detroit Lions fan. He was a natural athlete and excelled on the fast pitch softball team at Upjohn. Nelson was generous with his time and friendship. Many will remember him for his compassion and humble actions. His family includes his children: Michelle (Terry) Finafrock, Matthew (Mary) Major, Mark (Sondra) Major, and Mary Ellen (Bill) DeYoung; his grandchildren: R.J (Rachelle) Finafrock, Jeff Finafrock, Mark DeYoung, Chris DeYoung, Michael Major, Sarah Major, and Nolan Major; his brother Marshall (Jan) Major; and many nieces and nephews. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife, his brothers James and Marvin Major, and his best friend Gene Toornman. Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, June 9th at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Burial & Cremation Services, 3926 S. 9th Street, Kalamazoo. His funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 10th at 1:00 PM at the funeral home, with Reverend William DeYoung officiating.
