Thomas Venable

Venable, Thomas, Maj. USAF Ret., 80, formerly of 4700 W. 13th St. N., Wichita, KS, passed away Thurs, June 20, 2013. His passing was peaceful and blessed, being surrounded by the love and communion of family. Tom, beloved father and husband, was a well-loved resident of Presbyterian Manor in Wichita, KS, where he lived with Sharon, his wife of over 60 years and high school sweetheart. Born in Enid, OK, Tom attended Enid High and later went on to get a Business Degree at OSU in Stillwater, OK. A veteran of the Vietnam War, Tom went on to join the US Air Force, serving 20 years as a C-130 Pilot and Maintenance Officer, with assignments in locations all over the world. Following military retirement, Tom was an active member of the business community, forming Wings for Christ (Pineville, LA), starting his own business, the Music Center (Derby, KS), and working as an engineer for Beech Aircraft (Wichita, KS) and Raytheon (Abilene, KS). In 1991, Tom and his wife retired to the Texas Hill Country, where they enjoyed 16 years of active RVing, both returning to KS in 2007, to be closer to family. Tom was a man of deep faith, an ordained minister and regular Sunday School teacher at various churches for which he and his wife belonged during their travels. Tom and his wife are members of First Christian Church in Kerrville, TX. Tom, who often referred to himself as the Boy who married the Homecoming Queen,will be sorely missed by all who knew him, who were touched by his gentle spirit, awed by his endless devotion to his wife and family, tickled by his humor, encouraged by his faith, and inspired by his caring nature. Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon Venable, Wichita, KS; daughters, Lisa Rodriguez Venable (Michael), Los Angeles, CA; Carla Venable, Wichita, KS; Dana Wixson (Galen), Georgetown, TX; and Jennifer Riek (Mark) Santa Fe, NM; sisters, Betty Smith (Clinton) of Surprize, AZ, and Barbara Montgomery (Clive), Grand Junction CO; and granddaughter, Alyssa Wixson. Visitation: 2-8pm Mon, June 24 with family present 6-7pm. Funeral service: 10am Tues, June 25, both at Culbertson-Smith Mortuary, 115 S. Seneca. Private Family Interment: Wed, June 26, Kansas Veterans Cemetery in Winfield, KS. Memorial Service for Presbyterian Manor Residents: 3pm Wed, June 26, at Presbyterian Manor of Wichita, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Inter-Faith Ministries, 917 N. Market, Wichita, KS 67214; Salvation Army, 350 N.
