Anthony Gythiel Obituary

Gythiel, Dr. Anthony P., 83, retired WSU professor and renowned translator, entered into eternal rest on May 15, 2014 in Wichita. Fourth of seven children, Anthony and his twin sister, Antoinette, were born in Poperinge, West Flanders in 1930. He was nine when their mother, Elise, was killed during the Nazi bombardment of Belguim. After earning a bachelor's in philosophy and master's in theology in Belgium, Dr. Gythiel went to Zaire as a Jesuit missionary. While a teacher in rebellion-torn Kinshasa, his life was often in danger. In 1963, Gythiel relocated to Michigan, where he earned a master's in English literature and a Ph.D. in medieval studies from the Univ. of Detroit. In 1968, he married Dana Jorns, teacher at a Lutheran school, and became a naturalized citizen. On the Wichita State University faculty since 1971, Dr. Gythiel taught medieval literature and history. His reputation as a disciplined instructor endeared him to many students. During his 39 years at WSU, Dr. Gythiel received numerous honors, including the first-ever John R. Barrier Distinguished Teacher Award. He retired in 2010. Dr. Gythiel embraced Orthodox Christianity in 1981. For the remainder of his life, Orthodox studies (and gardening) occupied most of his time away from class. In 2008, at a unique academic convocation at St. George Cathedral, he was granted an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree, from St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary in New York. Dr. Gythiel's faith, historical training, and familiarity with 13 languages made him uniquely suited for the difficult work of translating theological-historical works about Eastern Christianity. Fourteen of his translated books have been published since 1985. He remained active in retirement, diligently translating important works by Evdokimov, Deseille, Bunge and Danielou. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Dana, and two sisters, Monique and Maria, both of whom live in Belgium, as do 12 nieces and nephews. In addition to his mother, Gythiel was preceded in death by his father, Marcel, and four siblings, Antoinette, Theresa, Paul, and Frans. A Trisagion and Funeral Service will be held Monday, May 19, 2014 at 7:00 P.M., at St. George Orthodox Christian Cathedral, 7515 E. 13th, followed by a graveside interment at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Preston, KS, on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at 11:30 A.M. Funeral services are provided by Downing & Lahey East Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the WSU Foundation, 1845 Fairmount, Wichita, KS 67260-0002 which oversees two scholarships named for Dr. Gythiel, to St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary for student scholarship, 575 Scarsdale Rd., Yonkers, NY 10707, or to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202. www.dlwichita.com

Dr Gythiel remains to be one of my most favorite teachers of all time. Every time I got to Wichita, I made sure to look for him and visit. I last visited his home six years ago. He and his wife kindly served me some food. While attending WSU, I made sure that I had taken every class that he taught. It's been a pleasure knowing you. You will be greatly missed. My most sincere condolences go out to your family. I'm sorry I had no idea you had passed away a year ago . . .

We just saw Tony's name in the Univ of Detroit Alum Mag. I was in Grad School with him from 1963-65 and when we asked him to marry us in December '65, he delayed his official withdrawal from the priesthood to do so. So smart, warm and amusing a friend and human being. We extend belated prayers to his widow. Jack and Nancy Hussey

It was an honor to have Dr. Gythiel as one of my professors. He was an amazing man, a repository of knowledge, and maybe most importantly -- a man who lived history and taught its lessons to others. My heart goes out to his family, and to his WSU family as well.

I treasured my associations and friendship with Tony and always stood in awe of his scholarship, integrity and decency. He was a colleague, friend, and much respected scholar. He was as a medieval scholastic would say "mirable visu" - "wonderful to behold!"

Professor Gythiel was the most faithful, in all senses of the word, colleague one could ever hope to have: he attended every theater event organized by WSU's French section and offered his steadfast support of our mission in other ways impossible to summarize... Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gythiel family now and evermore. Modern & Classical Languages.

Dr. Gythiel inspired me to visit Greece during my 1970's class in Greek Mythology. He was very dynamic and was a good teacher role model! I will not forget him. Maria Mendia

Dr. Gythiel was the best professor I had at WSU as he taught the Reformation class I was in. He challenged me to do better and I was so glad I had the chance to tell him in later years how much I enjoyed that class. So sorry to hear of his passing may he rest peacefully.

It's been more than 30 years, but the impact of Tony's teaching has never left as I've tried to articulate "what is important." An even bigger impact was being invited into his home and sharing stories and meals with him and his wonderful wife, Dana. My thoughts and prayers are with you, Dana, at this time.

Tony was a remarkable colleague-- wise, funny, generous. Our world is less rich for the loss of his presence in it. Love to you, Dana.

During my junior year in college, I felt lost and still did not know what I wanted to major in. Being interested in Rome, I took one of Dr. Gythiel's classes, and knew half way through the semester I as so inspired that I changed my major to History. Dr. Gythiel's immense knowledge made classes intense, but that is only because he did not have enough time in the semester for all of the knowledge that he wanted to impart on his students. He was one of the greatest teachers that I had the honor of learning from. I take comfort in knowing that through my notes and his writings that I will still be able to learn from him for years to come. Later on as I came to know Dana, my respect and admiration for him grew because it was visible that yes, education was one of his passions, but Dana was his greatest. I will miss him dearly and my greatest condolences go out to you Dana.

Dr. Gythiel was a wonderful man and I was blessed to take one of his classes at WSU. We had a lot of visits while he sat in the commons area before class began. It was a privilege getting to know Dr. Gythiel. When Mrs. Gythiel attended class it was easy to see their love and devotion for each other. My thoughts are with the Gythiel family.

Dana, I was sorry to learn today that Tony had passed away. Please accept my condolences. You and Tony were seated behind us at Kim's wedding. That was when I learned you were married. Now you live closer after your move to Shepherds Crossing. We know two other couples there. Take care. Carol Jones
