Cookson, Margaret Joyce Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died peacefully surrounded by her family on January 8, 2017. Rosary, 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 11; Mass of Christian Burial, 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 12, both at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Wichita, where she was a member until the final few years of her life. Born on January 31, 1925, to Milford and Lucia Wedel, "Joyce" was united in marriage to Charles W. Cookson at Blessed Sacrament on May 7, 1949. Their union was blessed with six children, nineteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. A graduate of Cathedral High School, she attended the University of Wichita and graduated from Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in food research. Prior to her marriage, she was employed by the Wichita Dairy Council. After her children were grown, Joyce continued her lifelong interest in health foods with a volunteer position as nutritionist for Guadalupe Clinic. She also served many years as a driver for the American Red Cross and as a member of the Good Neighbor Nutrition Committee. At Blessed Sacrament, Joyce was an active member of Our Lady of Fatima Library Board, co-chair of their Tobit Ministry, Camp Fire Girls leader and had a weekly Eucharistic Adoration hour. She was a member of Chi Omega Bridge Club, Home Economics Club and the Agatharian Society. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; infant son, Joseph M. Cookson; and husband, Charles. She is survived by her children, Lucia Biehler (Jim), Anne Oxler (Doug), Charles Cookson (Yvonne), John Cookson (Lisa) and Michael Cookson (Lynn); sister, Lucia McCamey; and her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Memorials have been established at her current parish, St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 3636 N. Ridge Road, Wichita, KS 67205 and Guadalupe Clinic, 940 S. St. Francis, Wichita, KS 67211.
