Lester, Gladys S., 102, died Friday, February 12, 2014 at the Life Care Center. She was born on September 10, 2011 at the farm of her parents, Ezra C. and Margaret Stretcher Schafer; she was the second of three daughters. The farm was located near Canada in Marion County. She attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse at the southwest corner of the farm; the building was recently the Canada Bait Shop. In 1929 she graduated from Marion High School and attended Weslyan and the American Academy of Art in Chicago. In 1937 she married Allen V. Lester. After moving to Wichita she was employed at the First National Bank, now Intrust, from 1942 to 1963. In 1966 she and Mr. Lester moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. Following his death in 1980 she returned to Wichita. She was an accomplished artist working in oils, acrylics and watercolors. She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church and PEO Chapter EI. She is survived by her son, Stephan (Pam); granddaughters, Stephanie Clark (Dean), and Susan Kaplan (Brian); and 4 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her half-brother, CR Moulton of Salina. Burial to be in Marion County Cemetery. Downing & Lahey East Mortuary.
