Kerschen, Paul Francis, 65, returned to heaven on March 28, 2014, surrounded by his adoring caregivers and friends at Kansas Neurological Institute in Topeka. Born in Wichita on June 16, 1948, Paul was the quintessential innocent. At 15 months old, he fell ill with an acute form of meningitis that raised his temperature to a dangerous 107 degrees. Paul narrowly survived that early threat to his life, with support from the relatives at his bedside and the motherly care of a pediatrician practicing in an era when medicine lacked the capacity to stop the disease's onslaught. The illness left Paul with severe mental and physical disabilities that eventually required his heartsick parents to put him in the care of a state institution. Still, the affection, kindness, and respect from Paul's caregivers at KNI and elsewhere meant that Paul was never without a home and never far from loved ones. His life was defined not by limits but by lessons. Paul taught us that blessings appear in the unlikeliest of places, that friends and family must never be taken for granted, and that unconditional love does indeed exist. He never knew hatred nor felt the sting of it; he bore no prejudice; and his smile conveyed a purity few could fathom. He was bright, he was beautiful, and now he is free. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Syl and Polly; brother, Jerry; and a sister, Sylvia Janet. He is survived by his sisters Kathy (Tom) Borniger of Wichita and Mary Beth (Ken) Johnson of Phoenix; sister-in-law Shirley Kerschen; aunt Wanda Palmer of Wichita; uncles Al (Mary) Kerschen of St. Charles, Mo., Bill (Shirley) Kerschen of Wichita, Jerry Kerschen of Phoenix, and Joe Kerschen of Littleton, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews. Recitation of the Rosary will be at 7 p.m. Monday, March 31, and Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, both at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 430 N. Broadway St., Wichita, KS. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Kansas Neurological Institute Patient Benefit Fund, 3107 SW 21st St., Topeka, KS 66604. Condolences may be offered at www.resthavenmortuary-cemetery.com
