O'Dell, Shirley A. (Chadd), 79, a life-long and steadfast caregiver in her home, family, career, and community, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014, at her home in Wichita. Shirley was born to Lonnie "Dutch" and Pearl (Searle) Chadd on Aug. 12, 1934, and spent her childhood in Seward, Kan. She graduated from St. Mary of the Plains High School in Dodge City, Kan., and later earned her nursing degree at the Dominican School of Nursing in Great Bend, Kan. After graduation, Shirley worked for Dr. L.G. Graves in St. John. She then moved to Wichita, where she served the community for 21 years in various nursing capacities. She retired in 2006, as Supervisor of Child Care Licenser and was awarded the Distinguished Service Citation. Her passion was working with youth. She married Charles "Chuck" O'Dell on Oct. 10, 1959, and together they owned and operated O'Dell Washer Supply in Kansas City, and then Wichita. Chuck preceded her in death Sept. 18, 2004. Shirley was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Holly and Monte Chadd; and sisters, Maxine and Kay Chadd. Shirley is survived by a sister, Jewel Chadd-Broadfoot of Overland Park, Kan.; four brothers, Rolly (Geralyne) Chadd of Wichita, Lynn (Karen) Chadd of Hutchinson, Lonnie (Jackie) Chadd of Manteca, Calif., Tony (Marsha) Chadd of Ulysses. She had many nieces and nephews, who were all "her kids." Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 27; Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 28, both at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 645 N. 119th St. W., Wichita, KS 67235. Interment will be at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery, Seward, Kan., at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Catholic Charities, 437 N. Topeka, Wichita, KS 67202, and Boys and Girls Club of Central Kansas, Oaklawn Club, 4900 S. Clifton, Wichita, KS 67216. Baker Funeral Home, Wichita.
