WELLINGTON - Altman, Harlan C. Jr., 90, of Dallas, Texas, formerly of Wellington, Kan., passed away peacefully with family, Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, in Dallas and in the care of Hospice. Harlan was born the son of Harlan Cribbs Sr. and Katherine (Barbour) Altman in Wellington, on March 1, 1922. He attended Wellington High School and later attended the University of Kansas, where he was the quarterback of the KU football team and a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He remained an avid follower of KU sports throughout his lifetime. Harlan served in the United States Army in World War II and later in the Korean Conflict. Harlan attained the rank of First Lieutenant, was captured in Europe and was decorated for Valor with the Silver Star, Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He was united in marriage to Virginia A. Phipps on Nov. 17, 1945, in Wichita. He returned to the University of Kansas Law School and obtained his Juris Doctorate, was a member of the Kansas and Oklahoma BAR Associations and practiced law in Wellington, Kansas for over 50 years. During this time, he was also house counsel for the Stewart Companies of Wellington. Harlan is survived by his son, Harry K. Altman of Coppell, Texas; his brothers, Richard B. Altman, Houston, Texas and William W. Altman, Clearwater, Kan.; his daughters-in-law, Helen and Pam of Dallas; four grandchildren, Harlan C. Altman IV and his wife, Kayla and Chase Altman of Dallas; Amelia Altman and Jacquelyn Altman of Denver; and two great-grandchildren, Halston Altman and Huntley Altman. He is preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and his son, Harlan C. Altman III. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Wellington. Hawks-Shelley Funeral Home & Crematory of Wellington is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in his name to the Children's Fund at the First Presbyterian Church of Wellington or the Wellington Humane Society. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
