Harry George Penland, 88, Lenexa, Kan., passed away November 1, 2013. Harry was born in Marion, Kan., to Roy Penland and Ruby Smith Penland on Oct. 24, 1925. Harry graduated from Marion High School in 1943. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Maxine, sister, Vera Penland Lucas and his parents. Harry served in the US Army from 1948 until 1950 and was stationed at Fort Riley. He retired from the Santa Fe Railroad in 1983 after 39 years of service. He is a past Exalted Ruler of the Augusta Elks Lodge. One of Harry's cherished associations has been with the Kansas City Abdallah Shrine since 1970. He was a member of the Trail 70's, Motor Patrol and Oriental Band. He was the treasure of the Abdallah for seven years. He is survived by son, Ron Penland and daughter-in-law Betty of Mission Viejo, Calif.; daughter, Jan (Penland) Hare and son-in- law Kenny of Shawnee, Kan.; grandchildren, Steve Penland of Aliso Viejo, Calif., Beth Penland Bungay (Kyle) of Mission Viejo, Amber Vernon of New York, NY, Kris Downing (Ken) of Lenexa, Megan Spies (Fabrice) of San Clemente, Calif., Patrick Walker of Mission Viejo; great grandchildren, Jessika, Dawson, Dylan, and Jaylee Downing, Micahla Paquette, Marcel and Olivier Spies, Jackson Bungay and Huxley Walker. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Porter Funeral Home in Lenexa. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. In lieu flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Hospitals-St. Louis, 2001 S.
