James Raymond Grimm, 60, of Liberty, went to be pain-free in the arms of his Lord and Savior on August 7, 2013. A funeral service celebrating Jim's life will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, I-35 at State Route 291, Liberty. Immediately following the service, friends are invited to join Jim's family in the West Wing of the church for a visitation and reception. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, in Glenridge Cemetery, Liberty. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Jim Grimm Music Scholarship at William Jewell College. Jim was born June 16, 1953, in Des Moines, Iowa, the eldest of three children of James Ray and Betty Colleen (Stanton) Grimm. His parents preceded him in death. He graduated from Urbandale High School in Urbandale, Iowa. Jim received his Bachelor's degree in music from William Jewell College, where he would continue to teach hundreds of students to play and love the classical guitar for the next 30 years. He later completed his Master's degree, arranging music for and recording his first CD while recovering from open-heart surgery. Jim was a sales rep in the music industry for years and later owned and operated his own wholesale business, K. C. Music Supply. He was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, where he often played classical guitar in worship, and was known for providing the music at the Christmas Eve Silent Lord's Supper year after year. He loved sharing his guitar music and played many events and concerts, recording two CDs. He also enjoyed sailing his Catalina 22 and was a member of Paradise Yacht Club at Smithville Lake. He studied and earned many sailing certifications from the American Sailing Association. Jim loved to travel. Jim was a survivor of Hodgkin's lymphoma for over 35 years, battling through heart valve replacement, numerous by-passes, diabetes and many other resulting complications from the cancer treatments. As spoken by a friend, "His legacy will be one of great impact and enduring strength. His life, demonstrating grace in the middle of difficulty, was always an inspiration." He is survived and dearly missed by his wife of 23 years, Carol (Duncan) Grimm; son, Christopher James Grimm; sister, Becky Hutchinson and her husband Greg of Omaha, Neb.; brother, Bob Grimm and his wife Debbie of Des Moines, Iowa; niece, Jessica Hutchinson; nephew, Ben Hutchinson; as well as other family members, fans, and friends that include his beloved dog, Dolly, who loved to go fishing with Jim. Dear Grimm Family.
We are very saddened to learn of Jim's passing.
He went way beyond helping us many, many times.
We remember him as a true friend and a great help to us over the years.
We are saddened deeply. We have just began to re-open our music store two years after the Joplin tornado. I was searching google for Jim to try and re-connect.
Our thoughts and prayers to the Grimm family.
Trust us when we say, he WILL be missed!
God Bless the Grimm Family. Thanks, Glory Days Music, Dave, Ben and Ben Peterson

Carol and family, I want to tell you how thankful I am that our church hosted Jim on two occasions last year and greatly enjoyed his beautiful music. He was a man who exhibited the grace of God in his giftedness, and in his gentle and sweet personality. I pray for you in this loss of such a dear man who shared a Christian example throughout his life.

Jim was a good friend when I was 15. I have only heard of his passing today. He led the rock band I was in as a boy. We traveled all over Iowa playing almost every weekend all through high school. He will always be a part of my most cherished memories. My thoughts are with his family.

The best part of taking guitar lessons from Jim back in the 1970s was when I could coaxe him into playing for me at the end of a lesson. What an inspiration it was to sit in a small practice room and hear him play something like Recuerdas de la Alhambra, which seemed to flow from his fingers like magic. In the decades that followed he remained the best musician I've ever known - a guy whose talent was as ferocious as his personality was gentle, humble and compassionate.

My friend and I took guitar lessons from Jim at William Jewell College in the mid-1970's. We were kids and our mothers alternated driving us and picking us up for the guitar lessons. Jim gave me the gift of an enduring appreciation of the beauty and craft of the classical guitar. He was a good guitar teacher and a gifted guitarist. It was a joy to see and hear him play.

I spent many a day at the music building at WJC around Jim. He and I would be practicing. Believe it or not that was 40 years ago. I enjoyed his music when he performed at PVBC, and he always had a kind word for me. He will be serenading the angels now!

Always enjoyed Jim's guitar playing at church. I am happy to have known Jim & Carol since before they were married and have many fond memories – they made time for a variety of friends. Will miss Jim's sense of humor & joking with him. Jim enjoyed discussing travels and he loved the ocean and being on the water. Glad Jim's physical pain/struggles have ceased. He can now play guitar in heaven.
