DERALD J. SLAGLE(1928 - 2014)

Derald J. Slagle, 85, of Prairie Village, Ks, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2014 at Villa St. Joseph. He was surrounded by his loving family as his eleven year struggle with Alzheimer's came to an end. A celebration of Derald's life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 22, at Old Mission United Methodist Church with a reception to follow. Burial will be a private family event at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Overland Park, Kansas. Derald was born October 2, 1928, in Pleasant Hope, Missouri to Floyd Preston and Lois Cornelia (Sechler) Slagle. He was the oldest of 2 children and the son of a banker and a teacher. He attended the University of Missouri, where he received his BS in Business. He spent his first year after graduation working for Commerce Bank. He was drafted into the army and spent two years at Fort Benjamin Harrison teaching his fellow service men how to use an IBM punchcard. During his time in the army, Derald attended graduate school at Indiana University. He also later attended the Graduate School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin. After Derald was discharged, he returned to Kansas City and worked for United Missouri Bank. He spent the next 30 years as a commercial loan officer and retired as an executive vice president from UMB. Derald went on to work for Roeland Park Bank and US Bank. During his long career in banking he was also involved in many civic organizations including serving as President of the American Institute of Banking, President of the Wholesale Credit Association and President of the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Kansas City, Missouri. He retired from banking in 1999. Derald and his wife, Gloria, joined Old Mission United Methodist Church in 1959. For the next 50 years, he gave generously of his time and financial expertise to the Kansas East Conference of the United Methodist Church and to Old Mission United Methodist Church. He held multiple chairmanship positions for both organizations. His positions for the United Methodist Conference included his being Chairman of the United Methodist Church Finance Committee, Chairman of the Board of Pensions, and Chairman of the United Methodist Foundation. And at Old Mission United Methodist Church, his positions included Chairman of the Old Mission Finance Committee, Chairman of the Board, and Chairman of Pastor Parish Committee. Derald also taught Sunday School, sang bass in the church choir and was a member of the Pathfinders Sunday School Class. Derald is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gloria Justine Slagle, daughter Dr. Genelle Justine Slagle, granddaughter Sophia Renee Justine Martens, and sister Kay Sharon Weaver.
