Helen Irene Hartegan, 97, Gardner, Kan., passed away December 2, 2013, at Olathe Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 555 W. Main, Gardner. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Lenexa, Kan. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. before the service. Condolences may be left at www.brucefuneralhome.com Helen was born Jan. 25, 1916, in Oglesby, Okla., to Oliver O. and Edna (Pugh) Topping. She graduated from Ramona High School where she was an outstanding guard on their basketball team that went to State. She moved to KCK in 1934. Helen married Richard Elwood Hartegan on Aug. 1, 1937, in Rosedale, Kan. She decorated cakes at the Rushton Bakery in KCK. They moved from KCK to Shawnee in 1951, where she worked at Bartlett Drapery. They later moved to Gardner in 1970. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, now Divine Mercy, the Bakers' Union #218 in KCMO, and the Altar Society. She was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary #2993 in Olathe. Helen was a gifted seamstress and an avid card player. A great cook, Helen was very active in preparing funeral dinners. She was a very special lady and friend. Helen will be dearly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Richard, grandson, Scott Richard Burdolski, and sister, Alma Gray. Helen is survived by her daughter, Karen "Katy" Burdolski and Joseph, Gardner; grandson, Mark Burdolski, Gardner; and her brother, Harold O. Topping of Victoria, Texas.
