Dr. Willis Lynn "Tom" Tompkins(1921 - 2013)

TOMPKINS Dr. Willis Lynn "Tom" Tompkins, 91, of Kansas City, Mo., passed away at St. Luke's Hospice House November 4, 2013. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, Mo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke's Hospital Foundation, St. Luke's Hospice House, Country Club Christian Church, or the University of Kansas Endowment. Dr. W.L. Tompkins was born Dec. 17, 1921, in Delavan, Kan. He was a graduate of Council Grove High School, the University of Kansas, and Ohio State University. He served in the US Navy in WWII. Married to Marie Larson in 1945, he retired as a Commander in the Navy Reserve in 1962. His spent his career as an administrator in higher education as President of Missouri Valley College, Academic V.P. of Pittsburg State University, Assistant Dean of Men at University of Kansas and Ohio University, and Director of Development at Rockhurst College. He completed his career as a Resource Development Consultant with Marts & Lundy. Dr. Tompkins was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Helen Tompkins. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Marie; daughters, Peggy (Dale) Harris, Emily (Gary) Heath and Marti (Gregg) Harrison; his grandchildren, Ben (Erica) Harris, Grant (Jodie) Harris, Rachel Wynslow, Sara Heath, Paige Harrison and Jesse (Jason) Ayres; his brother, Wendell Tompkins; and cousins, nieces and nephews. Tom will be remembered for his positive spirit, his humor, his generous and loving nature, and his lifelong desire to be of service. D.W.
