JOHN DOULL Obituary

John Doull, 94, Ph.D. and M.D., of Olathe, Ks passed away March 24, 2017. John was born Sept. 13, 1922, in Baker, Mont., to John and Vyvian Doull. John married Vera Mae Orsborn on March 1, 1958, and was devoted to her for 59 years. John served in the Navy as an Electronic Technicians Mate Second Class from 1944 to 1946. He was an Eagle Scout who inspired his twin sons to follow his achievement. He was a faithful husband, loving father, respected colleague and a man of faith. His faith was a foundation of his life. He loved his church, his friends there and his God. His professional accomplishments are significant, but John was always modest and would not want them all listed. He had significant awards and honors worldwide. He advanced the study of Toxicology, and published Casarett and Doull's Toxicology (8 versions), a textbook used in Emergency rooms around the world. He was also Professor Emeritus of Pharmacology and Toxicology at KU Medical Center. John was a Charter Member and past President of the Society of Toxicology. He was a consultant to the National Institute of Health, the National Academy of Sciences, the EPA and The White House Advisory Panel. He was dedicated to his profession and those who were in it. He was committed to University of Kansas Medical Center, his colleagues there, and the study of Toxicology. His commitment to his wife was unwavering. After a recent cancer diagnosis, he pursued rigorous treatment to extend his time with her. It was his single desire. John is survived by wife, Vera, daughter, Ellen (Todd) Winter, son, John (Annette) Doull, son, James (Marti) Doull, grandchildren, Sarah (Darren) Heavey, Rachel Doull, James Doull, Patrick Doull, John V. (Mandy) Doull, Amanda Doull, Matt Doull, John Van Keuren Winter, Nicholas Winter, Ryan (Kendall) Winter, and great-grandchildren, Ella Doull, Avie Doull, Remi Doull, Jake Holzinger and Addie Heavey. Visitation with the family will be at Indian Heights United Methodist Church at 10211 Nall, Overland Park KS from 5-7 p.m. Friday, March 31. Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 1, at the same location. There will be no graveside services, as John will be cremated. In lieu of flowers, contributions are welcome to The John Doull MD & PHD Symposium in Toxicology Endowment Fund at the KU Endowment Fund Association, PO Box 928, Lawrence, KS 66044. I am proud to say Dr John Doull was on my dissertation committee. He was the consummate professor of toxicology and of his students admired him as a role model. Rest in peace, Dr. Doull.

I found out earlier this week that John had died (I was in Kenya until the end of March). My heart hurts for his family and friends to lose such a marvelous man. May God surround you with his strength and comfort as you mourn the loss of your husband, dad, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. I first met John in early 1978 when I joined the staff of the Safety Office at the University of Kansas Medical Center for which he was the director. He was my mentor, an example of what a leader should be and a friend. Although I saw him infrequently after I left the medical center in 2006, he still had a profound influence on me and how I conducted myself in leadership roles. I'm forever grateful for his influence on my life. He will be missed.

John was an example and inspiration for generations of toxicology students and post-docs; it is hard to imagine that future generations will not have the opportunity to meet him.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and friends during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there's a hope for the ones we have lost in death can be so reassuring.

I had the esteemed pleasure of first meeting and speaking with John at length at our December 2010 first meeting of the USP Toxicology Expert Committee in Maryland. John was a dynamic individual with a marvelous personality and was a highly-respected respected long-time leader in the field of toxicology. He will be missed greatly! It was always a pleasure to converse with John. He usually brought up some I was not aware of. John was an accomplished organist. He proudly played the wedding march for his daughter Ellen's marriage to Todd Winter.. His influence will be present long after he is gone.
