1916 - 2013 | Obituary Condolences
Elvie Mitchell Atwell, 96, Overland Park, Kan., passed away Friday, November 15, 2013. He was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Miller County, Mo., and was married to Mary L. Atwell for 47 years. He attended Atwell elementary school through the eighth grade and grew up farming in central Missouri. He lived through the Depression by working the fruit orchards in California. After the Depression, he served time in the Army during WWII in the Pacific front and earned the rank of corporal. He worked for St. Luke's Hospital for 42 years at a variety of positions and the last 20 years managing the hospital warehouse. He liked to say over the years he "did everything but surgery." After retiring in 1981, he enjoyed nature and pursued his passions of raising dogs, hunting, gardening and bird watching. One of his greatest pleasures was running his beagles chase after rabbits and hearing them bawl. He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Atwell; step-children, David Gardner and wife Ann, Gail Solwa, Brett Gardner; grandchildren, Scott Kelley, Douglas Kelley, Cara Carter, Shayn Solwa, Amber Solwa, Aaron Gardner, Nicholas Gardner, six great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew. He was loved and will be missed by his family. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Geneva Atwell, son, Kenneth Atwell and grandson, Christopher Atwell. Visitation 9 a.m. and funeral service at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf Avenue, Overland Park, KS 66204. Graveside services will be held immediately following at Maple Hill Cemetery, 2301 S. 34th St., Kansas City, Kan. D.W. Newcomer's and Sons Funeral Homes, Cemeteries, Crematories.
