Obituary Condolences

FIRESTONE Helen Marieta Teegarden Firestone, 85, of Liberty, Mo., passed away peacefully surrounded by family July 18, 2013, at Valley Manor in Excelsior Springs. The daughter of Earle and Marietta Teegarden, Helen was born Oct. 3, 1927, in Cameron, Mo., at the home of her grandparents. She lived in Kidder and Kingston, Mo., before graduating from Hamilton High School in 1945. Helen attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a degree in education in 1949. One summer during her college years, she worked as a Harvey Girl at Union Station in Kansas City. After graduation, Helen taught English and Speech in La Porte City, Iowa, then traveled around the U.S. for JC Penney. She met her husband, David Firestone, when they were both working at Peck's department store in Kansas City. They married in 1952 and had two children, Don and Marieta. While raising their family in Roeland Park, Kan., Helen worked as a substitute teacher and market researcher. After retirement, Helen and David moved to Overland Park and enjoyed traveling and square dancing. Helen volunteered at Spofford and was a living history storyteller. She was a long-time member of Epworth-Roanoke United Methodist Church and more recently Liberty United Methodist Church, and a member of PEO. Helen is survived by her husband, David Firestone, son, Don Firestone and wife Cindy of Salt Lake City, Utah, daughter, Marieta Knopf and husband David of Kansas City, North, her grandchildren, Amy and Trudy Firestone, Isaac Knopf, Sarah Knopf-Amelung and husband Matthew Knopf-Amelung. She also leaves her brother, Earle Teegarden, Jr., his wife Renetta, sister-in-law, Emily Guion, brother-in-law, Robert Firestone and his wife Sue, and many nieces and nephews. Services 11 a.m. Monday, Liberty United Methodist Church, 1001 Sunset, Liberty, MO 64068. Entombment White Chapel Memorial Gardens Gladstone, Mo.
