LOREN LICKTEIG Obituary

Loren G. "Sam" Lickteig passed away on Nov. 14, 2012 of complications from MS and heartbreaking disappointment caused by the Kansas City Chiefs football team. A celebration of life is set for Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. at Coronation of Our Lady Catholic Church, 13000 Bennington Avenue, Grandview, MO, with a luncheon following in the church hall. They soon made their home in Grandview, with their five children, where they lived for over 30 years. Sam volunteered 20 years to the city of Grandview serving as City Councilman, Planning Commissioner, President of Chamber, Steering Committee and the Chairman for St. Joseph Hospital in the 1970s. He was a Real Estate broker and Appraiser. Sam was preceded in death by the love of his life, Joan Lickteig, in July of 2012, his son, Matt 'Mickey' Lickteig in 1999, his parents, and his brothers Bob and Frank. Survivors are his children, Diana (Ron) Hennessey, Jennifer Lickteig, Amy (Brad) Turner, Jake (Missy) Lickteig; daughter-in-law, Laura (David) Cooper; his grandchildren, Kristen Hennessey, Katie (Daniel) Ottone, Rick Morales and Fallon Madrigal, Greg and Rob Lickteig, Zack and Madi Turner, Lucy, Gracie and Charlie Lickteig; great- grandchildren, Lola and Zoey Morales; his four siblings, Don Lickteig, Dee Airola, LaVerne Heider Harlow and LaVone O'Donnell; and numerous relatives and friends. Diana, I am so sorry for your loss. Amanda Lutz shared the obit with me and I just wanted you to know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. My Dad passed away in January of this year and I understand you lost your Mom earlier this year also. Please know that you have two beautiful angels watching over you.

I spent a few nights at the Lickteig estate during my college years and both of your parents were always so wonderful to me. Your household was always full of fun and laughter and action....there was never a dull moment. I loved every moment shared with you and your family. I wanted to thank you for being so kind to me. I think of you often with love....

The Chiefs reference may seem trivial to some, but not to a sports fan. Fandom is in the blood and in the soul and in the heart -- win or lose, but somehow a little more in the losing.

Diane - Condolences on the passing of your parents in 2012. Peace be with you and your family. As much as I would like to believe, I'm afraid even your father in heaven is beyond helping the hapless Chiefs. All the best, Richard & Julie Paradise.

Dear Llickteig family,My condolences to all.It has been a difficult year for your family but i was impressed with how devoted everyone was to Sam.The story of your father was on a philadelphia news broadcast earlier this week.Iam a former Eagles season ticket holder from the 80's,now suffering silently like Chief's fans.Growing up in the 60's i loved watching AFL games on NBC network.Who could forget Len Dawson,Otis Taylor,Art Still. One of my wife's teachers in high school was Mr. George Cherry father of All Pro Deron Cherry. One of my sisters often spent time watching the children of Chief's ex president Carl Peterson and John Bunting (former asst coach) when they were with the eagles.maybe underneath i really am a chief's fan? However i also share your pain because my mother also passed 20 years ago from the complications of MS.may God bless and keep all of you strong.

Although I have never met "Sam". It's obvious that this man was larger than life...and now greater than death. I too will never be able to watch a Chiefs game without thinking about him and the memory that he left behind. God Bless him and your family during this difficult time. May humor be your healing balm and may it spread like wildfire.

P.S. I'm sure he will put in a good word with God to put the Chiefs back on the right track.

I did not know Sam or his family, but I know what it is like to love the Chiefs. I was amused by the inclusion of his humor in this obituary, and it shows a great deal of love from his family. I will never be able to watch the Chiefs again without thinking of Sam.

One thing's for sure, I'm certain he looking down and watching this weekend when they play the Denver Broncos and just maybe they may acknowledge his passing with a win.

God bless your father, may he rest in peace. I too am a life long Chiefs fan. Thank you for adding a small amount of humor to what I am sure is a difficult time. I understand your beloved father changed shirts during a Chiefs game, I change hats. Even though I never got a chance to meet your Dad, I feel a kinship with him. The next time I am watching our Chiefs, your father will be in my thoughts.

My deepest condolences for your loss. I'm a Chiefs fan in Massachusetts (Patriots country), and I understand the heartbreak. If these were Sam's words and if a member of his family thought enough to let them be used, then the brightness of life truly does still shine in people willing to let it, even in the darkest of times. All of my thoughts and prayers.
