Obituary Condolences

Mary Agnes Cummings, 76, of Olathe, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2013, at Villa St. Francis Nursing Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., Thursday, October 3, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 900 S. Honeysuckle Dr, Olathe, KS, with burial at Floral Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30-11 a.m. prior to service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Villa St. Francis, the Dementia Activities Neighborhood, in care of Linda Iyler, 16600 W. 126 St, Olathe, KS 66062. Mary was born June 7, 1937 to Agnes and Dennis Cummings. She graduated from Hogan High School in May 1954. She became Sister Dennis Mary for 13 years through Sisters of Charity in Leavenworth. She graduated with her BS from Kansas State Teachers College- Emporia in 1967, her MA in education from University of Missouri-KC in 1971, and additional graduate studies from Baker University in 1993. Mary retired from Hickman Mills Consolidated School District No. 1 in 2003 after 35 years of teaching at Warford Elementary and Johnson Elementary. She was awarded the Outstanding Teacher of the Year for that district in 1981. She was loved by her students and had many past students revisit to thank her for helping them reach their goals to graduate college. Mary is preceded in death by her brothers: Robert, John, and James Cummings; and nephew Chris Cummings. Survivors include friend of 45 years Martha L. McCully, 12 nieces and nephews, and Foxy the beloved animal of the home. The family would like to thank the nursing staff under the direction of Debra Adam at Villa St. Francis Nursing Home.
