i grew up in KS as cole merrills best friend 5th grade - 9th. I practically lived at the Coles house, if we weren’t at mine and took family trips with them to the Lake of the Ozarks. MJ was an amazing women & mother and I was saddened when my attempt to search Cole online reviled this tragic news.

I see in March it will be the anniversary of her accident and would very much like to express my condolences from my family to yours.
If you would also pass my thoughts to Myron, Cole and Kip I would greatly appreciate it.

God bless, and so sorry for the loss

It's hard to believe that Mary Jane is gone. I met her when I was fresh out of college in 1980 as a long-term sub at Flint, and then off and on over the years at meetings. When I reflect on our last few conversations, I realize that they were of substance; they were about life rather than day-to-day stresses that we all get caught up in. Mary Jane is the type of person who doesn't leave things unsaid; for this reason, I have no regrets or wish that I had a chance to express my goodwill for her because we already have. Our most recent chat was at a retirement workshop last fall when we sat together for a few minutes. I will miss her positive, supportive spirit.

The Merrill Family, I am deeply saddened for your loss. Please accept our condolences during this time. Mrs. Merrill was a wonderful teacher at Flint Elementary. She was kind, loving, gentle and most of all patient. My brother and I will always remember her smile and her cool red framed glasses she always wore. She will be missed.

Myron, Cole and Kip words can not express how deeply sorry I am for your loss. Mary Jane was a wonderful mother, teacher and friend. She impacted not only my life, but my daughter Logan's life as well. Logan always talked so fondly about Mary Jane.
The last time I spoke with Mary Jane she was anixiously awaiting the birth of her first grandchild, Vivian Grace. Mary Jane was taken far too early from you all.
My heart goes out to your family.
I will hold my children just a little bit longer in my embrace, for you never know what tomorrow will bring.

Mary Jane was one of the kindest and most caring people I have ever known, it was truly a pleasure having her right across the street growing up. Our little community was always very close knit, looking out for one another, and Mary Jane was a big part of this. I can say one thing for sure, my childhood was happier because she was a part of it. To Myron, Cole and Kipper, you all are in my thoughts and prayers, if you need anything at all let me know.

Myron, Kip, and Cole, we were so saddened of Mary Jane's passing from our friend Marcia McCain, a teacher in SM schools. We will never forget the fun times we had as teachers at Apache School and beyond. The time at Lake of the Ozarks when Cole was just a baby comes to mind as well as the many birthday parties with Helen Helvey and the Apache gang. We will always remember Mary Jane's ever present smile and sincere caring and compassion for all who crossed her path. Janice and Jim Hooper

Mary Jane was quite the gentle soul. Her love of people was so obvious. She had the ability to talk with you like you were the only person she was concerned with. She wore a lot of different hats with her job. She had to deal with many different types of people in varied capacities. She was a teacher, peer, mentor, leader, and cheerleader of all students. She would see the good in every situation that she encountered. Her radiant smile was contagious as well as her positive outlook on life. The BJF community will dearly miss her. Her influence has touched so many students throughout the years. Vivian will have to hear all the wonderful things that her Grandma did, and how she touched so many lives in a positive way. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Killeen Koontz a fellow BJF teacher

I thank God for Mary's supportive friendship with my widowed mother. Ours is not to ask why--we are the clay and He the potter, but in the end it is enough that every disciple will be like their master--first in life's trial, then in heaven's glory. God bless, Mary, we'll miss you until we meet again in the city of God.

Myron and family, I am so shocked and saddened to hear about Mary Jane. Every October we did the Alzheimer's Memory Walk and remembered our Moms. Afterwards we would have lunch and she always had so many stories to share about her family and travels. She was such a fun and sweet person to be around. I will miss her greatly and I will walk each year in memory of my Mom and hers.

Myron, Cole, and Kip I first met Mary Jane when we taught together in the learning center at Flint Elementary. I feel privleged to have known her all these years and can't begin to fathom your pain. Mary Jane was wonderful with her students. She believed in them and was an inspiration to all of those around her. Upbeat and energized are adjectives that describe her. Mary Jane believed strongly in philanthropic work and was very active in several organizations. May God's grace carry you through these difficult times. Julie

Guys, I hate you are having to go through this, it really is unimaginable. I hope you can find comfort in the fact that anyone who met Mary Jane thought the world of her. She was always such an amazing person to talk to, extremely genuine, such qualities which no doubt contributed to her success in her career as well as raising her family. You've much to be proud of.

Sorrow fills my heart as I think of the kindness Mary Jane shared with my family. Although we've been coworkers for over 5 years, our true friendship began a couple of years ago when she took in a family member of our own...a handful of a chocolate lab named Tucker. Although we had given up all hope for a "normal" family dog, Mary Jane happily invited him into her life and gave him what he needed...love, patience, and atttention. Mary Jane is the kind of teacher, friend, coworker, mother, and wife I admire full heartedly. She never gave up on anyone, and always found the positives in all situations. I will miss her smile, her kindness, her soft laugh, but most of all, her ability to find hope for those who need it most. We will miss you dearly, Mary Jane.

I worked with Mary Jane for the last 3 years at Bluejacket-Flint. She was no ordinary woman, she could light up a room with her smile and her laughter. We meet people in our lives who touch us in a special way and Mary Jane was one of those people. She could make you see the good in everyone and everything and had the kindest heart of anyone I've ever known. Your family is in our thoughts and prayers. She spoke of all of you with such love and happiness. She will be missed terribly but never forgotten.

March 18, 2010

I am so sorry to hear about Mary Jane; she was such a kind and thoughtful person; she always treated me with respect. We exchanged Christmas and birthday cards each year...especially since her birthday was two days after mine and we were the same age. Yes, we traveled 12 years thru school together. My heart is filled with a void. Yes I know the family must also be having a difficult time right now. But please know that our prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Myron, Cole, Kip, Natalie, and little Vivian,
May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.
I met Mary Jane when I began teaching at Flint. It was wonderful having Mary Jane just across the hall....she became somewhat of a mentor to me. I soon found out the Mary Jane lived just about 15 houses away....just around the block. Mary Jane was the most patient, loving,, and an outstanding teacher.
She was a great friend to me and I will miss her. To all in her family, especially Myron....I can't even imagine the pain you're going through. I'm just around the corner if you need anything at all.
